On the way to work this morning in my S2000, driving past some road works and heard a loud pop. Then I began hearing what sounded like something sticking to the tyre. Stopped at a petrol station, got out to have a look at all the tyres. All seemed fine and fully pressurised so got back in and drove to work.

When I parked and got out I heard a very loud hissing noise so I immediately started looking at the front driver wheel. That was fine so I walked round the other side of the car and saw the rear passenger side wheel actually deflating!

Anyway, spacesaver is on now and I’ve also scheduled replacement rear tyres to be fitted tomorrow (mobile fitting at work) as the tread was low anyway.

Here is tyre when it came off...

Anyway, the punctured tyre will be sitting next to me on the way home as it won’t fit in the boot...

And here is what went in... (are you sitting down?)... The pen is there as a comparison.

I imagine that if I had tyres that werent as thick as the Bridgestone RE050A's, I would a suffered a very dangerous blowout!

Blimey. A couple more of those and your tyre would have looked like Hellraiser.

Yikes!!!

Must have been pretty unlucky for that to go into the tyre like that. I cant even imagine how that happened. Must have hit the bolt quite hard for the blunt end to penetrate the tyre like that..!

I'd have changed that tyre already - looks very like it's on the wear bars, or close to it.

I've found that tyres with low tread do seem to end up punctured. You know, I'll get another 1000 miles out of those. Two days later there's half an iron monger's shop stuck in the tyre.

You're right, I'm getting replacements fitted tomorrow. Just have to put up looking like a bit of berk having the wheel as a passenger in the car, tonight and tomorrow.

Similar thing happened to me a few years ago, it even punched a nice dent into the steel wheel.

I imagine that if the bolt was lying longways, with the bigger end at the top, then it would flip up as the car went over it, forcing the blunt end in.

You mentioned the space saver is on the car. Is it on the rear? When I had to do this in Mrs Eltax's MX-5, I ended up swapping the front tyre with the rear for the duration the space saver was on. I'd done all of about 3 miles with it on the rear, it was rather squiffy with the skinny tyre on the back. smile

Might be worth swapping if you have any distance to go.

Not a bad idea, although I "only "have to do 14 miles home and 14 miles back before the replacements go on and I WILL be driving like granddad.

From experiance, having the wheel as a passenger, unsecured is lethal.

Get it belted up, or better still in the boot, at home would be safer!

Didnt someone let their passenger hole the spare wheel for them as they drove. IIRC the wheel exploded and killed/seriously injured the passenger.

Make sure its completely flat!

edit: looks like it was a fatality. Very sad.
