I've only ever heard good things about Harbour Cars for sales. Not sure if they do servicing though.

Harbour cars allthough very good do not do servicing, can't remember their name but there is a place down empress road in soto'n, not used them but seem a pretty good outfit, and finally who I use, Jota Engineering in Horley nr Gatwick 01293775550. Paul Sage is fantastic and totaly trustworthy, he offers superb service at a reasonable cost and is always eagar to point out things you can do your self to save a few quid.

I popped in there a couple of weeks back to have a look at a 987 they had in. Seemed like a decent place.I'm on the hunt for a 987 2.7, looking to buy later this year. Just want to get a 'feel' for what I'm looking for; at the moment the options on cars are bewildering and I want to know what I'm buying!

Speak to Kier at http://www.chappellsportscars.com/. He is a top guy who is extremely knowledgeable with a wealth of experience. If he doesn't have what you're after, he will source it for you.

I know you've probably heard this umpteen times already but if I was you I would definitely hunt for a 3.2/3.4 S, the extra power really makes that car, the chassis needs more than the 2.7 can give it!I'm on the hunt for a 987 2.7, looking to buy later this year. As for options, I wouldn't get too hung up on most of them, I know you actually enjoy driving your cars rather than just poncing around in them, so it would be worth trying to find one with PASM; I had it on my Cayman and it transforms the drive when you're pressing on, almost felt too soft without it, also the Porsche short-shift kit made the gearbox a joy to use.
Other than that the rest for me were a bit take it or leave it, I was lucky to have bought mine off of a complete lunatic who ticked pretty much every box from the factory, but not many of them actually added to the driving experience.

Yeah I may have heard that! 
A 3.2 would certainly not be out of the budget, but I fear insurance costs may well be!
I shall be doing some hunting at all of these places, so thanks chaps.
ETA I was actually turned off PASM because of any expense if it went wrong, horror stories on the Audi & Merc systems had put me off...

Luke, I would have thought for the most part a 2.7 would be very similar in performance to your MX5 but more thirsty and more expensive in the servicing department/general running costs. If you want to go the Boxster route, I would have thought waiting until the S is attainable is the best realistic plan?

A 2.7 is definitely quicker acceleration wise, much faster top end. Not much thirstier than my car actually, the MX-5 is hideously thirsty for it's size and weight. The only big running cost differences will come in the form of servicing and insurance. Tax will be the same as the '5 (£245) as well. LukeBird said:

That does surprise me, on the fuel front. I must admit I was thinking of the MK1 Boxster, so I'm guessing the newer one is a different kettle of fish. Can't believe the '5 is £245 to tax. The same as an SL55 AMG my friend has just bought.matc said:

I'll have a look into it when I've sussed out how many cars have it. Matt, the '5 is in the old highest (pre-'06) band so is the same as the most polluting cars from back then, despite weighing ~1050kgs or so and having a 1.8 engine! Old engine tech is not good for economy! Tank-to-tank fill ups, I've never seen more than 27ish to the gallon, normally 26-27.
ETA matc, what are you running these days? Didn't you say at the last meet you were looking at moving the 360 on?
