Type 9 box in a 3000M????
Discussion
In a M 4 speed ..Start with the correct box (rebuilt OR EVEN uprated front bearing unit on a 2.8 cable speedo tail housing with input shaft mod) bell housing, (either yours modified (I do these) or old ford or new alloy) new cross member (I stock these) IMHO quick-shift (to stop any interior trim change) and mod to gear lever to suit position, clutch release bearing (at the VERY least), spigot bearing, steel ended version of the speedo cable, speedo recalibration.
On a ROAD car the very best thing you will do to the car ...but 1st and 2nd are close, almost notchy and the box needs a little patience until warm (NOTHING that respect of the speed limits will not naturally cope with) good for 150 BHP ONLY any thing more and you need a professional to build the box.

I found this, and although it's for a Marcos, it may prove helpfull.
(Also has the Ford Essex v6)

Hi Fred, this Marcos conversion MIGHT apply IF the 3000M had already got the overdrive version fitted....the 4 speed (that I convert the customers unit)/alloy/OE ford bell housing is a different unit, so this will be a little different.(Also has the Ford Essex v6)

The old 3 ltr 4 speed was always knows for its bullet proof reliability and very good ratios. At 1 point I even ran a 300hp V8 with a one on the back and an adapter plate.
It seems to me that having an original 4 speed plus overdrive is a pretty good thing for a TVR.
The type 9 is a weaker box with not particularly good ratios in standard form and a notchy shift.
5th gear is also known to shear of the end of the shaft
I can understand upgrading a 3ltr to a T5 box but not a type 9 ??

Neil,
Voodoo 13 has a 2500M with the Triumph O/D box (I quite liked the box in ours when Joolz ran one).

I was referring to the original Poster, but even again. the standard triumph 4 speed with j type overdrive on 2nd, 3rd and 4th, or 3rd and 4th if a later model is a lovely gearbox. It wouldn't be something I would be in a hurry to replace with a Type 9!Voodoo 13 has a 2500M with the Triumph O/D box (I quite liked the box in ours when Joolz ran one).

I think a type 9 on a warmed up 4 cylinder engine is about as much as I would like to do with one.

Stuck a very high spec T5 on the race car. It was notchy and not very direct. Since had some work by J Ried with a Hurst quick shift and it is now the box I expected it to be, BUT, and a big one...quite expensive (new).
This cured mine too!
Sorry Neil, I stand by what I said previusly...my type 9 in the 3000s made the car, I can't say that the box is in any way as good as the 4 speed for being perfectly clean in the change BUT normal road usage and I love it.
