Noticed it quite a lot recently, driving at night is a total nightmare these days. I often end up having to divert my gaze from where i want to be due to the dazzling effect of lights coming towards me. This is much worse on unlit roads too.

What made me notice this was driving at night last week, an old Micra approached me, mrs.miggins driving i think, it was some old G reg but the lights were hardly that bright at all. I could look towards them without having a migraine, unlike the stuff out there today. Obviously the lights were legal and good enough to drive with, just a lot less brighter.

I often find myself folding in the side mirrors these days because there's too much glare from behind.

The worst offenders are these new vans, like the crafter or new shape fiat ducato (and its french counterparts), and X5's and such (and these new audi's with fairy lights in the front).

Lastly, whilst on the subject of lights, what the fk is with these newer cars, like the audi, switching on a fog light at the front when the car is turning/indicating? Seems like a cheap rip off of the Vauxhall AFL if you ask me. Its also fking annoying and i would guess, illegal as well.

Cayennes seem to be the brightest, I've seen dimmer at Wembley stadium.

French cars always seem to be fitted with extra bright lights that point the wrong way. Usually Renaults. Peugeot seem to be unable to make a car that can sustain two headlights at the same time, so you always meet a 207 or 406 with one light at a gazillion candle power, melting your retinas.

I blame headlight washers...never used to be a problem when everyone's headlights were covered in crap...

Could be the standard of driving has fallen so much that you get many WAGS ect driving around with full beems on constantly? haha

Nah the ones which really get me are Lexus 4X4's on country roads who have extra bright headlights as well as taking up more than their fair share of the road.

Completely agree, there have been more than a few times when I could see very little on an unlit road due to an oncoming car. My headlights are noticeably dimmer than a lot of newer cars (although my full beams rock).

The worst offenders are people who put those high-intensity bulbs in ordinary lights.

oh, and Audi DRLs left on at night.

Executive cars with Xenons are the worst. I can actually hear my eyes fizzing such is the retina burning force of the light. Its such a piercing light too, utterly clinical rather than the warm glow you get from cars fitted with standard halogens.

I had a BMW follow me on the motorway with ridiculously bright headlights and his front fogs on too.

He passed me and then I followed him with my full beam and front fogs on until I was sufficiently bored. I'd have taken them off but his lights were so bright I could see from behind that he'd not switched off his fogs.

Generally lights are brighter, but it doesn't usually bother me too much as long as they're used and aligned correctly. For me, the benefit of being able to see further yourself outweighs the difficulties of dealing with oncoming traffic.

You're just getting old smile

Quite usually 4x4 type vehicles, simply the headlights are positioned higher in relation to other vehicles and so will dazzle drivers of 'normal' size cars.

It always amuses me when people moan about being dazzled by front fogs, I've never been bothered by them but run of the mill modern headlights really are a pain in the retinas. Doesn't help that a lot of modern cars headlights seem to be mounted rather high on the nose pouring light straight into my back window.

I'm honestly thinking of tinting my wing mirrors to cut down the glare.
