Hello! I'm looking at getting a new car, at the moment I have a 1.8 TDDi Focus, which is good enough to get me from A to B, but I want something a bit more fun to drive. I like bigger cars as well, and saw the Mondeo ST220, which seems to fit what I'm looking for.

Does anyone have one on here? Whats it like for a day car, general commuting (town roads mostly). What is the insurance like for you? At the moment I'm paying £660 on my Focus (21 and male, don't think its too bad!) a quick quote gave me £1,200 fully comp.

Is there anything to look out for? They seem rather cheap on Autotrader, around £3,000 to £4,000 for a 2003/2004 plate.

Looking around on the net people have said that the MPG isn't brilliant, but some people seem to say they get 18MPG, others have quoted 60MPG (Don't believe this as on a good day I get around 50MPG in my Focus).

Any other advice/opinons on them would be great! I like that it doesn't stand out that much either, not one for showing off etc.

Many thanks!

60MPGrofl Mine shows 27, that is driven how a 3l V6 should be on A roads mostly. 34 On an M Way if you stick to speed limits-which we all do of course. Early cars can have bad rust problems, just search the threads on here, this seems to pop up weekly so you should find loads of info.

Had one a couple of years back really liked it (05 plate)so much so i am now searching for another but so far have been unable to find a late model one in silver with black leather nice smooth ride with lots of toys and plenty of go when required, i remember when i first got mine a friend had just bought a merc and said to me why did you buy that its a poxy Ford, when we compaired all the toys etc the mondeo had much more than his merc and he paid twice what i had for his car plus the rarity value, see a LOT more mercs than st220,s

Dave, sounds like another "ST220 TDCi" mistake to me... hehe

I'll say one thing for it, considering it's size (which you'll notice coming from a Focus, it's a big car) it drives absolutely superbly and somehow manages to feel taught and sharp when pushing on, but smooth and relaxed when cruising. The engine is very revvy and really responds well to being pushed hard without ever feeling stressed. Sometimes it doesn't 'feel' all that fast but I've noticed it hides it's speed well, you're often going quicker than you think because it's so relaxed.

I average 26mpg with a mix of mostly town and some motorway, but that's with the older 5-speed gearbox.

You know you want to biggrin

Mine is a hack to take me to the station and back, run things to the tip on occasions and also for motorway runs and the occasional 4 seat transport.

Generally speaking it returns 26mpg on the station run. Given this is mainly B-roads and doesn't get up to full temperature, that's not bad going.

A decent run at the weekend sees it climb to about 28mpg, and a decent motorway run realises 32-34mpg.

I have the later 6 speed car (the mid life facelift).

I recently thought about chopping it in for a Focus ST, but realised I was paying more money, for a less practical car, with fewer toys - so I'm sticking with the Mondy.

Thanks for all the replies! The MPG everyone seems to be getting isn't as bad as I thought which is a bonus!

Now to start saving!

Mine does 24-26mpg, but that's with short journeys, work is just short of 8 miles away.

On a motorway run at 80 it'll do 32mpg, a decent road run does 28/29mpg.

Not bad, about the same as my old 330 (auto)

I get 26 mpg at best. Engine warning light came on today, steering wheel itself has started making a funny noise, PAS is noisy when cold, has stalled at the traffic lights twice when idle and also bent an alloy on a pothole recently.

All in 5 months.
Never had this with my Vectra... rotaterolleyes

Re engine warning light and stalling issues check the hoses on the inlet manifold, one may well be split, quick simple fix.

PAS noisy suggests rack or pump issue - get it checked before it costs.

Can't really blame a bent alloy on the car....

Surely as already mentioned he's on about the TDCi version. If so then yes it is a fantastic allround motor VeHicle. On a week of short journey's I'll get around 36-38mpg but if I'm doing more motorway miles it'll be around 42-44mpg and I've not even had it serviced for 50k miles (skint frown). Insurance, for some reason last year I was paying $450 (33) but I've just had to jump ship and the cheapest was over £800 (grrrr).

Hope you get one, they are defo value for money.
