Can anyone tell me who officially sets the car insurance groupings for cars on UK roads?

My insurance company are telling me that my XC90 is group 19 but autotrader, parkers and various car magazines say it's group 15. Thus they are charging extra for the premium and won't do open driving which I need on cars over group 15.

XC90 D5 185

Thanks

Surely the end premium is more important?

DirectLine (IIRC) use a scale of 10-99 rather than 1-20 for example..

It's the ABI and you can check specific models here:-

The old groups 1-20 has been replaced with groups 1-50 to further segregate cars nearer the 'fast' end of the scale.

Thanks, just phone a broker friend and he also said 15.

Reason it's an issue is I need open driving and they don't cover cars with group 16 or more.

According to that ^^ link, a 2.4 XC90 D5 185 is group 15 in old money.

It was Thathcam who devised the new groupings, apparently. I remember reading on the Parker's website "Your car should roughly double what group it's in, and your premium should stay about the same. A group 4 Fiesta becomes group 11, for instance".

Yeah, some great maths right there, it's nearly tripled!
