Hi all

I've just ready the 3000m and type 9 box thread and it got me back to thinking about my car.

The year before last saw a rebuild engine and now I'm thinking of a 5 speed box to help me on those longer journeys. Any suggestions on where I should start, things I need to be aware of and rough cost? I'd do the assembly myself but I'd need parts.

Cheers
Rob

Rob , You've come in on the wrong forum...perhaps the Caterham.

Have I missed the joke?

It says TVR on the front, back and various bits in the middle, not to mention that you've sold me quite a few parts in the past Adrian...

Hi Rob,
Sorry, I thought the only people who could afford 5 speeds were the Catherham mob ...However the reality is that is where the info is....and it's where you should be asking the questions. In all my time in TVR's I have never seen a 5 speed conversion in a 1600M.
Adrian@
Most likely that was Steve's thought too. and along will someone will come who's had it done!

I was offered a 1600M with a 5 speed box before I got the vixen. Was a good looking car, green with tan vinyl roof and matching interior. Is it not a similar conversion to the 3 litre?

or like Rob, am I missing an 'in' joke here?

Got a Vixen with a 5-speed, got a 1600M and a type 9 5-speed sitting on the garage floor, can't bring myself to lose the lovely smooth 4-speed for a clunky 5-speed ear defenders are the answernuts

Hi R&A...there was a joke ...then no joke...it is a large price of the 1600M to do this (at today's prices) try this
http://www.oocities.com/morgan4_4/gearbox.html (copy and paste into your browse)
Because I know about the 3000M costs and spec'd properly one conversion is approx 800+ UKP. When you can buy the car for 3000.UKP
Adrian@
Perhaps with better prices they will come into the price verses option to do.

Get hold of an RS2000 ally bellhousing, bolts straight on to engine & a 2.0 litre type 9 box.
Use RS2000 clutch release fork or fit a concentric hydraulic assy from Burtons or similar.
23 spline clutch plate available in 7.5" diam Sunbeam Ti or re drill flywheel for a 2.0 sierra 8.5" clutch if you wish
Make up a crossmember to suit, chassis crossmember support bkts are better a touch back from std mounting position.

Ian. In a vixen how far does the type 9 lever protrude back into the cockpit. I am a little worried about the Zetec / type 9 Combo in dads car, was thinking I may need to fab up a remote linkage to move the gearstick forward in the cockpit.

If you are a short and fat may be an issue !!
I am 6ft 1" & have seat nearly fully back. For me the Quaife type straight rose jointed stick comes up in perfect spot & gives a fantastic 'elan like' gear change
If you tyrap a cable shroud around the joint & base of stick, fill it full of grease it keeps loads crap out of rose joint & stops it wearing, if it don't wear it don't chatter.
Adrian
Regarding costs RS200 b/housings I have in past bought 2 s/h for a fiver, last one, I was given !
Think £150ish to buy new, Rally design probably cheapest.
Rose Jointed stick £60ish
You can stick with 7.5" cluch for road use, if braaing it off the line, good to have an 8.5".
Cheers Ian

So that's on a rebuilt box and new clutch (cause you will not want to pull the box again) 750 UKP in real money.
Adrian@
AND if you want a internal front layshaft bearing version plus 300

Costs are always subjective adrian. The brand new 2.0 zetec crate engine and BGH geartec Long 2.8 ratio type 9 cost me £800, Right place, Right time. the new Sump for the Zetec was £500 on its own!!!.

Using good second hand componants should get a 5 speed on the back of a crossflow for about £500 - £700 dependant on how much the box costs.

I bought a lovely LM25 RS2000 bellhousing for about £250.

Costs always depend on how pretty you want it all to look finished !!

Now Now John !!
Neil, In order to confirm for you if the old man will be able to reach the lever ok. When I get home I will measure the distance of lever to a couple of datum points on chassis. I will also give you measurements for front face of type 9 to chassis datum points, in case your engine/box position differant to a crossflow.
Owt else you want - let us know
Will post answers on here
Cheers Ian B
