I'm thinking about buying a Rolex Explorer II Model number 1655 - the Steve McQueen model.

I'm not really buying it to wear, maybe on the odd occasion - would it a safe bet not to loose any money in the future ?

Nothing is a safe bet really, but I'd say this would hold value, with all things being equal.

It's a particularly nice model I think, it doesn't ping many peoples Rolex Radar unless someone knows what they are anyway, in which case you'll just get a knowing thumbs up.

Quite cool, the only caveat I'd have is to buy from someone reputable as there's quite a lot of spoofing goes on.

I'd agree with all of what Andy said.
Given their rarity and propensity for faking, I would only buy from a very reputable Rolex reseller; someone like Mike Woods @ The old Watch Shop would be a good bet.

Funnily I was talking about exactly this with David Duggan in Burlington Arcade before Christmas.

He said that many people who bought them a few years ago are finding that there a LOT more of them around than was previously thought...hence prices dropping so heavily. He had a 1655 in the window on at £12K (still a bit toppy IMO...but that's central London for you) and claimed that two years previously he would have easily sold it at £20K+.

Personally...I still think it's a lovely watch and I'm still considering getting one. But I'm not expecting to make money. Only not to lose any. Although an exceptional watch with its original box and plenty of complete paperwork could well prove me wrong.

best of luck

For info Mikes is £POA on the website but it's £15k on MWR, and it's one without the slim second hand (so a later model) as well...

Although it is known as the Steve McQueen model, McQueen actually wore a Sub, and not an Explorer.

Still bloody nice though!

I think you're right. There are a good few around though it is rare to see one in the flesh. Last time I saw one was last year in the US. I was in the waiting area (seating area for long-suffering husbands) in a Beall's department store and got talking to an old timer waiting there too. Interesting old chap who had moved to Florida to work for NASA and worked through the glory days of the 60's and 70's. On his wrist was an orange 24h hand 1655 Explorer II and I just thought 'great choice - wonder if he knows how much it is worth these days'.

And, amongst others, a Hanhart fliegerchrono, complete on a Bund strap. cool
