Hi Guys,

Just passed my final apllication process to join West Mids - the Fitness test.

I've been given an approximate start date of August.

Thanks to Tonyrec, silverback mike etc who have answered a few of my posts in the past.

Cheers

Thanks Chaps,

Ledfoot - the fitness test for West Mids is a circuit based assult type course setup in a sports hall. You have to complete 3 laps in 3mins 45 or less. You can view the test on the west mids website, look under recruitment/fitness. Looks easy but when you have to do it it's a bit more complex than it looks.

I race mountain bikes cross county and run 3 times a week for about 8 miles, i passed with 35 seconds in hand, out of the group of 20, 11 passed. The PTI explained that they are getting toughter on fitness to combat the fact that some officers are getting unfit (to many doughnuts i guess) after being in the job for a while. It's certainly the case for the few that patrol in my area!!

Cheers Slider,

It's looking to be August for my start date. Hopefully i'll go to Tally Ho or Ryton as i live just outside of Brum.

Whats it like at Ryton? What hours are you having to work etc?

Thanks for any info.

Tally Ho is closing aparently or so our trainers have told us.

At Ryton you work from 0830 till 1730 with a couple of short breaks and 1 hr for lunch. Except on fridays when you finish at 1230. But that is changing as you are going on to the 12 week course whereas im on the last 15 week course.

So you will have to work till 1730 on fridays. You wont have any exams either, will all be knowledge checks and scenario tests.

Food is errrr interesting shall we say but not bad considering how much they get per person per day to spend on the food (£1.90) My accom isnt too bad actually 2 blocks have ensuite the remaining 4 dont.

So far the workload isnt too bad providing you keep on top of it but the first 4/5 weeks are the hardest.
You wont have a passing out parade but there are inspections. You must wear uniform during the working day including the big hat whenever you are outside.
The Bar is cheap and open from 8 till 2320 on the dot when the duty officer come in and takes your classes regardless of wether there is any beer left in or not.

You have 2 Fitech tests, Riot training, and cuffing / self defence. You wont have to do any swimming as again im on the last course to do the life saving... they are also scrapping first aid.

Anything else you need or want to know?

yeah im on the last ryton intake with a parade.. bit of a shame really.. Also the last to do first aid and life saving.
Yeah centrex had a budget cut of 30% but they also got stung on VAT which is costing them another few million aparently.. I read somewhere that it was a budget cut of about 20 mill but with the vat changes takes them upto 28 million loss. Cant remember exactly.

So Thames Valley residents have to stomach a 20% rise in Council Tax and the training centres and overall training of the police are being cut?

Bloody marvellous
