Which E39 M5 to Sell
Discussion
Between me and the boss we have two carbon black E39 M5. Mine is mint fully loaded 2001 and his is pre facelift that is in good condition. My boss wants to buy my car for its condition.
Both cars have full BMW history, mine has 87k on the clock. His has slightly more, ie somewhere in the mid 90's. Both have been under BMW warranty most of their lives and have had everything done.
I should get in the region of £11k, his is probably worth £7k as it needs the wheels done and there is a little bit of rust that needs sorting on the boot edge and on a small section of one of the rear wheel archs.
I fancy having a punt at selling his for him. Is it priced realistically to sell?

You can have all four wheels returned to their original condition for around £450 and I would get the rust looked at around the bootlid etc. A well prepared car will sell for more money that a car than needs a little work. Also get it detailed to get rid of any swirl marks etc....this will also increase the sale price.
Good E39 M5's will always sell, but I would hold off until April or May.

I echo Bellair's comments. Fuel prices have caused M5 prices to come right down but recently it seems they are coming up again (I think all the super cheap ones have been sold).
As you are aware, tyres and brakes on these can soon add up so if the one you sell needs neither (and no service), do point that out to buyers.

Both cars have had very recent clutches, brakes, premium tyres all round, batteries. The 2001 car has had new power steering pump and all new pipework. The older car has had a new alternator in the last week. Out local BMW stealer must love us as between the two cars we have probably spent £10k+ in the last year.
Neither needs any work done, other than a nip and tuck on the older car.

Good comments above, but I'd query how much having wheels refurbed etc adds to the value - in my view not as much as you pay to have the work done, it'll just sell more easily once someone views the car.
I don't think "all the cheap ones" have sold either - new, low priced cars seem to come on to the market regularly, and, as many owners have said, both on here and on the M5 board, it's hard to sell a pre-facelift for a "good" price.
