Head gaskets gone on my ZR. Had two quotes so far from bridge of don garage and a.w autotech. £700 and £1000 are ones I got from there as estimates.

Not too amused as i know it shouldn't be that much. Any recommendations of places that will do the job properly?

JD Motors in Insch - Dave is a qualified BMW guy and they are the only people I trust with my Broomstick. Right next to the station so you can get back into Aberdeen easily too.

That's who I'll be phoning next. Brother just got his Elise back from them and I've heard their labour charges are really good. As labour is the killer for garage prices.

Yes they're reasonably priced but to be honest for me it's as much getting a decent job done which I can trust - I'd sooner pay a bit more to get that than go for a slightly cheaper rate and then be let down.

Another shout for John and dave, great guys, very thorough job and they're really interested in cars, not just spanner-monkeys doing it 9-5 to pay for beer.

The fact that their rates are so reasonable is just another bonus really.

I've used AJ Ross at Ashley Park Lane for all my cars to date.....15 years worth. Proper job every time, reasonable rates, and guaranteed no-rip-off attitude.

Shame I am away offshore tomorrow or I could of done it for you, I have done about 10 HG on rovers/Mg's over the last year very easy to do 3 hours work and not that expensive about £50 for a full uprated head gasket kit with new bolts and £40 for oil and filters.
Out of all the HG's ive done on the K series engines I havent had to skim any of heads they only need skimmed when the engine has been roasted in most cases they havent and its just rubbers on the old type HG come away from the metal gasket and lead to the transfer of the oil in to the cooling water or vice versa.
What size of engine is it?

Very dependent. If I had another car to use for going to work I'd be in there like a fat Quine on cake. But don't want to mess things up really.

Would love to start getting hands dirty but this ain't worth it.

Head hasn't been boiled I don't think. Have not let the temp go into the red.

Will be getting rid of it most likely which is a shame as I really do love the car and it's possibly the best first car I could have got and would still recommend one to people.

That said. 9000 miles in 7 months without being looked after that well isn't great lol!

Anyone had experience with Arthur Wylie? Workmate recommended him and by far best price, seems like a decent guy and haven't heard a bad thing.

JD quoted £797.85 for the whole job, which would definitely be done properly. Just not sure whether it'd be worth it or I could afford it!

Another recommendation for JD Motors in Insch.

Is the car driveable? This will obviously impact on where you can take it unless it's recovered somewhere.

However, both John and Dave also know the K-series well as they seem to have become an unofficial Lotus specialist over the past couple of years; such is their reputation amongst the Hethelite community and many other car enthusiasts all over Scotland.

JD would be the most preferable place i'd put it in, but money is the problem. They have quoted £797.85 inc VAT.

It is driveable but would rather not, got it home just before it got to the red (temp gauge) so minimalizing any damage, as I really cannot budget for much else. So would have to check recovery prices.

They do seem like a great couple guys. Brother Ian just got his elise back from them now my little K has gone rofl

Prices up here for head gasket stuff is terrible. Thats far to high even the cheapest is shocking. I would be looking more for under 500. No wonder i go back down to falkirk for all my car stuff. My rover needs a new flexi pipe so its a new pipe with cat attached quoted silly prices just for the part up here.

It's why I do all my own work. New head gasket set £25 (might be more for K series as the bolts hold the main bearings in aswell) Had a friend try to do his own and dropped the bolts in...I was called soon after frown

Do you not go to the college motor bit across from my work though?
