Just wondered as I've got my 528 up for what I consider a give away price and I haven't had any calls from the PH advert at all.

Nothing odd about the spec or colour and its only on 70k with FSH.

depends how much you have it up for

I gave 2700 for a 99 528i SE Touring Auto with 51k on it - few cosmetic scars but mechanically fine

What sort of spec - I personaly skimmed past any ad with cloth when I was looking.......

£1,295.

Its dark blue with grey leather. Few small cosmetics but very far from even remotely tired.

I'm wondering if its too cheap but then I started it off at £1,995 fully expecting to get that for it with no interest.

I have had a few e39's all very very nice but i have never sold one from an advert on here or auto trader.

I had to px every one of them.

I think there is a very small market for a big thirsty car like an old 5 series, people are put of by this, i know there good cars, good on fuel ect ect but you gotta convince everyone else.

I did advertise one a few years ago,I had an ad running for 6 months and not one phonecall.

the only way I could get rid of my last one was to px it against a honda integra type R then sell the honda to get my money back. came out on top too smile

No, me either but I am. I don't have to sell it but the tax runs out at the end of the month and I've already got another car so its not going to get easier to shift.

It was on the 'trader too and all I had was a couple of Russians trying to scam me and a few '1000 cash' emails which I won't entertain on principle.

If people had viewed it and said don't like x and y fair enough but I've not even shown it to anyone. I don't even really want to sell it for that as I feel its worth more. I wouldn't doubt that in 6 months (if its sold) I'll be looking for another and struggle to find one.

A pal sold a t reg 523i se auto last week,silver with black leather,1 owner,120k miles,fbmwsh,eBay auction sold to a trader for £1400.

They are brilliant cars the e39,I must admit they are cracking value but a well looked after one will still give years of service.

I am also wondering about used values for e39's. I have a 2002 535i Sport auto in silver with black leather, electrically adjustable seats, sat nav, sunroof, xenon lights etc on 52,000 miles and in lovely condition.

I may be selling it due to impending redundancy but fear I may not get much for it as people will be put off by a V8 and fuel consumption concerns. Any realistic ideas on value?

This.

IME ebay auction is the way to go for popular cars. There is no other way IMO.

A few tips:
Start from 99p on a Thursday evening so it ends on Sunday night.
Don't have a reserve.
Take lots of decent pics and an honest description.
Don't say stuff like 'you're bidding to buy' or crap like that.

I'd be amazed if you do the above and don't achieve your asking price.

If my 328 issues continue i may be interested.

Chucked nearly £1500 at the car which only cost me £1800 in the last 6 months!!

Do you actually want to sell it or not??

You are at the lowest end of the car market selling a £1000 car, if someone is selling to move it on there will be very little profit in it. Therefore they will want to agree a price before they come over and see you, if you wont budge from your £1200 then there is no point them coming.

I have bought my last 15 cars without seeing them, ranging from a £4500 E Class estate to £42000 on a 730d sport, if they are not as described when I get there I can leave it, and have done twice, funnily enough both times BMWs, one am E39 530i sport touring and the other an E46 328i touring, but I hammer out a deal before trecking half way across the country, so we both know where we stand.

Put yourself in the buyers shoes, if you think it is only worth £1000 to you and you really want it would you travel miles in the hope of knocking a couple of hundred off or would you ask the seller if he will do it for £1000 before making the journey?

People get too precious with cars, they are after all just metal, and the seller will always think it is worth more, especially if it is a good'un, as I buyer you always expect the worst, that is why so many people spend thousands on buying new, piece of mind and nothing else.

Fair point.

What I was getting at is that I literally had an email saying '1000 cash'. Nothing else. It may be an old car and I'm not asking much for it but if someone can't be bothered to be polite then why should I bother?

If all its worth is £1,000 I'd rather just keep it in the garage for emergencies anyway.

I sold my nice 140k 51 plate 530i Touring at the end of Septemeber for £2800. The way prices have gone since then, I think I'd struggle to get £1900 if I still had it

Problem is, a fair few people found it really hard to type.
A good friend of mine is an old chap, really, really nice guy, incredibly clever, he builds his own planes, builds the old Stanley steam cars (and when I say builds them he turns the individual pistons and the only thing he buys in are things like the old headlights, steering wheel etc.) and he has just knocked himself up a 3 wheeler thing a bit like am Aerial Atom, using a Motor Guzzi engine.
However, he is nearly 80, he left school young and so writing is not his strong point, and computers certainly aren't.
He sends short emails like that to people, things he sees advertised online, he just bought a Model A Ford from the some guy in California, his email read "I will give you $14,000 for it?"
No response.
He then sent another one saying "At least make me a counter offer?"
He did then get a response and the guy thought he was a scammer, but in the end they got chatting and he had two for sale, he took them both.

All I'm saying is, sometimes we expect the worst from everyone these days, but maybe a quick mail back saying, tell you what, give me a call and let's have a chat about it might just pay dividends??
