Selling my car - quickest way to remove personal reg?

I'm currently selling my car which has a personal reg plate on it. I want to replace it with a normal plate for it's reg year (54) and retain the personal reg.

What's the process I need to follow to get this done asap?

Any ideas?!?

Thanks for that, but how do I deal with getting a new plate transferred to it - I have not got a replacement plate yet?

Can I buy a new reg and fill not the necessary forms to have it transferred to my car whilst I separately put the private reg on retention - I guess not as both require me to supply the original V5?

I'm sure they either give you back the original plate or allocate an age-related local one.

Put your private plate on retention. It will take around 2 - 4 weeks for the paperwork to be completed and your v5 to be back in your possession. Most likely you'll be reassigned the original registration number and with luck you won't have disposed of your previous physical number plates.

Don't advertise your car until you've got the new V5 as it's not ready for being sold yet.

Go to DVLA, pay them £105 and fill in a form. Wait 7 working days and they will send you back a replacement reg for your car and a retention certificate for your PP. Then wait another week or so for a replacement V5C to arrive in post direct from Swansea. Then sell car.

The new age related plate is issued by the DVLA when you put your cherished one on retention , it's all included in the one form / fee and not 2 separate procedures

The car has had the personal reg since new so has never had any other plates.

If it was registered from new with your private number, then the DVLA will issue a random age related plate as a replacement as part of the Retention process. The area identifier will be relevant to the issuing office.
