For the last few weeks I've being experimenting trying to work out when the oil is up to temp on the Z4 - Before the Witty remarks, it doesn't have an oil temp gauge, just a water temp one.

On pressing the oil level button, it seems when the engine is cold, the computer can't "work out" the oil level. It's only when the engine seems to have warmed up (a while after the water temp hits nominal) that the computer will recognise the oil level and read "ok".

I've been trying this out of sad / bored curiosity and am pretty sure i'm right and that it will only indicate once the oil is warmed up.

Has anyone else tried this or know more info behind it? Otherwise it's useful to know when the engine is warmed through and can be given some beans (obviously the M cars come with a handy gauge so not an issue on those)

Does your rev counter not have a dynamic red-zone? My E60 (and I thought most BMWs) adjust the red-zone in the rev counter to show you where you can rev up to, and once it is fully 'down' and you have the full range available, that indicates that oil has reached optimum temperature?

My 130 takes ages for the oil to warm up to its 100 Deg C...... Way more than 6 miles, more like 12.

As does the E46 M3 and I'd imagine the Z4M, infact probably all M cars.

My previous car, an E46 M3, had the oil temp gauge and as a rough estimate it took twice as long as the coolant to get to temperature. As such in my current car which doesn't have an oil temperature gauge I leave it double the time for the coolant before I start to open it up.

My Z4 23i had an oil temp gauge and my 35iS has one.

Engine temps for those cars are 100c and 120c. Took at least 10 miles of extra urban driving to reach those temps as well.
