perhaps he lit a plastic grille or something and then that set fire to the bumpers and paint.

why does someone setting fire to a car even begin to think that it is a good idea?

Yep, I read that, but I wouldn't have expected that to cause them to go up in flames.

Obviously I'm not an experienced arsonist.....

Does seem a bit farfetched, but plastic burns well, and if there's more nearby it'd spread fairly quickly? That or he used petrol as well, but I can't see any mention of it.

Naive, this is PH, everyone puts the sub 3K daily barge outside the house to ensure no potentail burglars think the house is occupied and all the sports/luxury/custo/race cars are in the armoured underground, heated, dehumidified garage....

Not really far-fetched, plastic grille surrounded by plastic bumper, various combustible bits of rubber/plastic/liquids under the bonnet. Probably took a few mins to take hold which is how he seemingly got away from the scene at the time after doing this to 8 cars.

A few years ago a similar thing happened in the village my brother lives in,one night four cars plus my brothers Transit all copped it. The method used was newspaper stuffed behind the front numberplate. I don't think they ever caught anyone in that case, they just stopped doing it or moved to Manchester!
