Just bought a new car and the guy took out the aftermarket headunit-no problem, I will get another.

But they all look like a chavs bedroom-flashing lights, constant scrolling of useless info, blah blah blah. They just end up looking cheap.

All the speakers are Alpine (Ok stuff I have been told?) but I just want a quality looking headunit in the car-not something that would fit in at a "Big Fat Gypsy Wedding" event.

Any ideas? Its an E36 M3 Evo by the way.

Clarion units are pretty "clean" in appearance and the scrolly flashy features can be disabled.

Look at Alpine for the head unit as well.

Good quality and not overly fussy. Think they were standard fit on Lambo's.

Sony seem to be the worst in this respect. My damn thing keeps scrolling through demo mode. You can reset it but when the battery is disconnected it defaults back.

I have a nice Alpine I am going to put in instead. Ipod only- no cd at all.

Alpine speakers are ok, not amazing but good enough.

Single Din or double?

How about this for a single din:

Not too flashy IMO.

Considering I have no idea what a DIN is, I expect a single would be fine!!!

Look pretty good actually.

You want single DIN for your E36.

Have a look for Nakamichi CD players - very understated, high quality and surprisingly cheap.

Beware Nakamichi - they are good when they work, but the CD mechanism fails over time so they stop playing CDs. That's why they're cheap now.
Check out Becker and Blaupunkt.
If you've got £100 then a Pioneer DEH P77MP is a high quality unit with understated looks. Second hand only though as now discontinued.
If you have £200 then a Pioneer P88RS II is excellent. I have one now, it's an incredibly full featured but classy looking stereo, and it integrates well with the look of a BMW dash. £220 can get you a new one from europe withhold full warranty from eBay. Best head unit I've owned to date.

On my Alpine unit it allows you to change the colour of all the illuminated lights to match the rest of your dash lights, if that helps.
