Looking for a tug for our recently acquired caravan, I've decided on a Mitsubishi Shogun. To avoid paying higher rates of VED, a pre March 2001 model seemed a good bet. Found an interesting one on ebay .. but see that it is an import (seems many are). No worries as such .. I currently drive an imported car.

However, the car is a 2000 model, has a 'X' number plate but was registered in the UK in 2003.

'Normally', such a car would pay the engine related tax of £205. However, because the importer must have advised the CO emissions, it has been assessed as band K .. £245 (and who knows what in the future?)

A quick!! call to DVLA (and dozens of options later), the lad politely said tough luck !

Anyone know of there is a (successful) procedure to ask DVLA to review this ?

TIA

A few years ago I imported a 1999 Honda CRV, it was on a Dublin plate .. when it came to register in the UK cost £400 for first years tax as they classed it as a new car. I couldn't get hold of paperwork to prove it's age.

Went around the houses on that one, but ended up paying !!

99% sure all imports just pay 'standard' rate VED certainly all the Yank V8's I've had have all been in the old 'standard' band as they don't have a specific UK CO2 test.

I rather doubt that the importer would have advised the CO emissions. The key question is whether the vehicle has Type Approval or underwent an SVA test when it was imported.

+1
My car is Jap but, although a version was sold in the UK, mine is JDM and never was. It was not registered at the DVLA until 2002, but I pay the PLG rate.

The relevant bit is this.
The rates shown only apply to cars that have been type approved in category M1 and registered on the basis of CO2 emissions measured in grams per kilometre (g/km) driven. These details are shown on the registration certificate (V5C).
Check your V5C. If no emission figures are shown, you may have grounds for a challenge. I don't know if there is a specific procedure. If the DVLA stand to lose money I doubt that they will make the process, whatever it is, an easy one.
