New ignition / starter motor
Discussion
Engine access isn't the best tbh. I replaced the alternator on mine and there was just enough room to get at everything I needed to. Bloody awkward job really.
Can't you find a decent Porsche indie to do it for you? I've managed to find one locally (W.Mids) and they only charge £40 hour labour.

IS a new ignition or starter motor for my Boxster something I can procure and do at home or is it a costly garage job?
You're asking the wrong question, though. You should be describing the symptoms and asking for suggestions rather than jumping to the possible causes.
So - things you need to check if the starter motor does not turn:
Ignition Switch, wiring loom to switch, coded key, immobiliser, load-shedding relay, wiring to starter, solenoid (usually on top of starter), starter motor. Others will no doubt add anything I have missed.
Of that list, my starting point would centre around the coded key (I assume it has one) and the immobiliser. Try your spare key, check how to reset the immobiliser (battery disconnect probably - but be careful how you do it). You don't have two coded/chipped keys on your keyring, do you?
Before chasing after immobiliser problems start with the basics.
If, (and perhaps you could clarify this), you are turning the ignition key to start the engine and there is no sound from the starter, then try the following.
1) Is the battery charged?
2) If yes - it's common that that there is a little push on connector onto the starter motor, which carries the signal from the ignition switch. As its a 'spade' connector, it can work loose, or corrode.
3) It could be the ignition switch, do you have lots of keys on your key ring, as this can wear the electric part of the switch, try 'waggling' the key as you are turning it.
If you aren't sure what your doing, then get an Auto electrician to check, don't start buying all sorts of spare parts when the likelyhood is that it's a simple problem.

He already asked....

OP, I assumed you'd got to the root of the problem. If you're getting no response (i.e no clicking) from the starter motor, as mentioned above - I would start looking at the wiring to it or the immobiliser. I still suspect the battery is at fault personally. The alarm/immobiliser could have detected a voltage drop (probably one of a few if the battery is dodgy), assumed the worst and has shut down.

Eurocarparts do replacement starters from £250-400.
Finding yours in the car might be a problem, but if you can locate it, there are only usually 3 or 4 bolts to undo.
Could be worth getting it refurbished if it's that expensive.Finding yours in the car might be a problem, but if you can locate it, there are only usually 3 or 4 bolts to undo.
Test the starter with some jump leads before you write it off as broken though.
