Swift Gti Alternator Problem..?

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post but could do with some help asap!
Driving home last night I noticed my speedo just stopped working, not sure if thats related but came to start it this morning and battery was dead. It will start with a jump from another car and run fine, but as soon as I turn the lights on it just dies. I'm thinking alternator or nakered battery? Anyone else had this problem before I go out and take the alternator off..
Also, are all swift alternators the same or are they gti's specific?
