My 89 SE has been off the road for 2 months with engine problems. Anyway I got a call from 'engine advantages' tuesday saying its all done!! They put a new manifold on it (traditional problem, it was cracked) with all new studs and gaskets, changed the cam belt, fixed the running problem and then set it up on the rolling road. I had it rolling roaded about 4 months before and it made 263bhp with 297lbft torque. Well heres the suprise bit! It made 330bhp!!!!!
Im over the moon! and it drives so much better.
Just thought I'd share that with you all.

Not to be a naysayer, but how the hell did you pick up 60 HP with just a new manifold? Are you running a different chip as well?

Kicking an SE up to 330HP just by doing what you said they did doesn't seem possible, or are we all missing something?

Second Dyno:-

BMC carbon dynamic airbox
'300 bhp' chip (unknowen origin)
Uprated actuator
15 psi boost
Oil change
Hayward & scott s/s exhaust 3" straight though no cat

Are these rear wheel numbers or are they the "corrected back to flywheel" numbers"?

If the former then that is quite stout. Try as I might with around 1 bar of boost I can only manage about 285 rear wheel on a Dynojet dynometer, the same one I've used for all my tests. However, I think I have some things in the works that will solve that problem!

Good job,
Ron

Just to add to the questions...

What were/are the weather conditions when you dino your car? If it was nice and cool with lower humidity, you def. can pick up some numbers (not that many, but enought to notice).

Re. the manifold, was it fitted stock, or did it get a port and polish before getting bolted on? That will also add to the Hp...

Sounds great!!!

Drive topless!!!
Cameron...

PS. If anyone would like to make a non-tax deductable donation to the Lotus needs some more Hp fund, my address can be provided!!! HAHAHAHA!!!!!

Kev have you got any pics or links to the CF air box you have installed? How does it differ in shape and is it meant to be better air flow gains than the current one?
Cheers

Interesting that you picked up nearly 70HP, but lost 17 ft pounds of torque.

Also, the only thing that really changed was your exhaust, the manifold and the plugs. That's still a huge HP gain from just those things.

I'd be interested to see what the numbers are if you took it back to the original rolling road for a second opinion.

Then again, since it was chipped originally, it could be that your old busted manifold was actually costing you a lot of HP...

PS - now I really need to get to a dyno
How does the ride feel? With the extra horsies you should more than see the difference before and after.

Rlearp :- that is a flywheel reading. I could only dream of 330@ the wheels. But while I was down there he had a escort cosworth with a just proven 560bhp!!!

Autocross7 :- I picked it up on tuesday 27th and since then its been raining, but before that it was quite nice. So it must have been done in nice conditions.
The manifold is standard, but you should see the state of the one he took off!!! Its completely F****D

Kylie :- The CDA is the most awsome bit of kit Ive got for my esprit. Its like a induction kit but incased in a carbon fibre box. I cut open the hole in the engine bay and connected it up to the origanal ducting behind the panel that hides lots of wires and stuff. It sounds awsome!! Ill get some pictures up as soon as I can. If you want one call Carnoisseur on 01702482545.

Mad kasia :- I was shocked at the gain too! I wanted around 300bhp.

Also I know a few mates who have gained bhp, but lost torque. A friend of mine who has a vauxhall nova (It may be a nova but it eats esprits for breakfast!)with a calibra turbo engine origanaly had 230bhp, got it tuned to 260bhp and also lost torque.

I knew the manifold was costing me bhp, but I didnt think that much! It sounds and drives like a dream now, and I completely wasted a BMW Z4 thing on the way home.

Ill get some pictures on here as soon as I can

Cheers, hope this answers all your questions. Feel free to ask as many as you like.

Sorry Kev, that was me, not Kasia...I keep forgetting she's logged in.

If you are pushing 15 psi of boost, u likely have the #6 Red Race Code chip, not the #4 310HP chip. If you are getting 15 psi, you are hitting 1.25 bar boost. The 310 chip goes to 1.1 bar, and the #5 330HP 1.2 bar.

Therefore, if your manifold was sucking serious power away, and now you've fixed it, and are running 1.25 bar boost, I can see you getting those numbers. And yes, you'd be quite fast (I run the #5 330 chip with a lot of other mods...not yet dynoed it but it is quick.)

An explanation of the chips:

Mike,

How are you figuring those numbers? 1.1 bar would be slightly over 16 psi....

Just curious.
