As the title reads really. I need something for work able to transport large items that is reliable, cheap and will keep going for years. Auto essential as London traffic is where I'll mostly be spending my time and half decent mpg would be nice.

Any thoughts/suggestions??

Rover 75 estate.

Amazing value for money. The V6's are a bit thirsty for town driving but the 1.8 engine isn't too bad.

Hmmm...all nice ideas but mpg on them all is not exactly "half decent". Also I assume running costs on the merc might be quite high.

If you buy a good W124 it will almost pay you to drive it. At least if you buy a solid 7 seat version.

I got the missus a P12 Primera estate T-Spec model and it has plenty of toys, including nav, ESP, reversing camera, IR controlled cruise with brake assist and the usuals of heated leather, isofix etc.

I'm finding it hard to fault really. Perhaps a little noisier than my BMW E38 but I suppose you'd expect that with it being a "white goods" estate vs. exec barge.

passat estate. my old man is a plumber. picked up a y plater, 2 litre petrol for 1600 quid. he uses it like a van, its always fully loaded up etc. he gets 40+ mpg on a run and is averaging 35 i think in it. It is a mnual though. Great car and very solid, hes not spent a penny on it in the year hes owned it and has done over 25k in it

My last car but one was a P11 Primera estate. 1.8l 16v SE model.

In all honesty, it was a really good car. Very comfy, smooth and easy to drive. Good on fuel and quick enough when it needed to be. I went for it based on reliability and the boot size. Looking at a lot of other estates, they tend to have the boot space filled by the arches. The primera doesnt.

Might not be the best estate but definatly one to look at. Prefered it to the Volvo that came after.

I'm sure you can get a decent Honda Civic or Accord estate/aerodeck in that budget, pretty bullletproof I'd imagine.
