Are there any competent LPG installers in Scotland?
Discussion
At the pub last night a mate said he'd bought an w210 E430 for the price of a good curry and night on the batter, and did I know anything about LPG? I don't, and google has been surprisingly unhelpful beyond suggesting that a) it's possible and b) satisfactory running depends entirely on a good install of a sequential multipoint system on a car with a sophisticated engine management system like the E430. Any scottish PHers have good words to say about installers?
yeah I can help on this!!
We have had 2 LPG systems installed on 2 different cars (Both MX5's)
The first system was installed via Green fuel, and was done at Martin Motors in Glasgow, done by the owner Dougie (I can give you further details if you require them)
The system was great, the car ran really well, my MX5 does about 600 miles a week, so cost effective beyond belief. We paid just over £2k (can get exact figures if you require) and it took about a week. He fitted a cylindrical tank which pretty much took up the whole boot was my only bug bear - would have been better with a todrial tank (fits in the space of your spare wheel) work man-ship couldn't complain.
We didn't really notice when it was running on gas verses running on petrol.
Our MX5 became sick and it was at the point it was a bit of a bucket but the system was still running well
So our options became (at no point would did we ever consider not getting a system fitted)
a) get the system taken out and moved onto a new car
or
b) start a new and then get a todrial tank fitted.
we contacted Martin Motors and they quoted approx. £1k to strip the kit out and then refit the kit. I found a place in Glasgow that would fit a new system for £1k but when I started to look deeper it seems they are dodgy (although their work man-ship was great according to reviews) they were a cash only sort of place (which seemed weird as they are directly behind a police station)
It became glaringly clear that if you cross the border literally you half the price of getting a system fitted.
Problem is it takes a couple of days at most places, although some will actually offer to pay for you accommodation
then I found http://www.professautogas.co.uk/ they will fit the kit in one day. (it is a long day tho)
they are a garage which solely fits LPG kits, the manager is a lovely guy, and probably the only one in the garage that speaks in English as the work force are all Polish. They fit kits every day all day so they are great at this. They buy in huge bulk so their prices are as keen as can be, and have all systems and tanks in stock. I really do not have a bad thing to say about this place. I saw their diary, and literally they had bookings for the 3 months ahead of when we had ours, and have fitted kits on most types of cars
Downside - it is in Wales, but even with the cost of petrol on the way down and LPG on the way back I still saved over a grand (upside for me is I had friends 10 minutes from the place so got to see them too)
I probably have wittered too much and not given you the info you want to know, but please ask any questions you want to know, and I will do my best, and if you want to have a look at the kit fitted I may be able to do that too.

Dougie is quite literally my next door neighbour. He fitted the LPG kit to my Range Rover. Good guy with decent prices but i beleive a few people are now using Clarksons in Bailiston now and seemto hve a fantastic reputation.
Try Simon at Angus Autogas in Arbroath. Total Petrolhead currently running a Focus ST on gas as a demo car. Highly recommended. www.angusautogas.co.uk
In gerenal terms, what kind of MPG do you get from LPG when compared to unleaded? Is it about the same, (but your fuel bill is halfed due to the fuel costing half as much) more or less?
I know it will be very much car dependant, but I was looking for a %age comparison against the normal fuel.
Those that have converted, what do you tend to achieve?

It varies, But you lose about 10% mpg wise.I know it will be very much car dependant, but I was looking for a %age comparison against the normal fuel.

My Range Rover was getting 16mpg on unleaded and on LPG it was getting 14mpg.
On the otherside, Family members S-Type Jag is getting 30ish mpg on unleaded and 25 on LPG.
But the drop is barely noticeable when your filling the tank for £50 and getting 300 miles out of a big, comfy V8.

I can currently get 500-600 miles from a tank in a big, comfy V8.
The problem is the cost of that tank.
