Standing Ovations

Why do audiences on TV shows do standing ovations as soon as someone comes on stage? They have just arrived for goodness sake. They haven't done anything exceptional yet or are the audience so overcome at seeing this z list celebrity that they have to perform a standing ovation. This is especially so for celebrity 'talent' show. Does it make the ego of the celebrity even bigger? Or is it in their contract?

I have absolutely no idea. I think exactly the same. It seems almost expected nowadays.
