Hi,

I have a 1973 De-Tomaso Pantera undergoing a full rebuiid. I am looking for a new Ford Windsor 351 around 400 to 450 H.P. I have looked as Real Steel and American Engines in the UK and Fastco and the Engine Factory from the USA. The USA seems to be a better price taking into account the freight and duty, but I have heard it is bit of a lottery buying from there. Any recommendations would we appreciated.

I’m not a Ford expert, but if you are after a new Windsor, then my (petrolhead) network tells me that if you buy in the States then you will pay around the same price in GBP as the price you see in USD. However, I understand that the US based engine builders are prone to be a little over-ambitious with their quoted BHP figures.

Have you considered a professional re-build of your existing block? There are loads of guys around out there, that can do this and probably deliver the HP you are after. Try googling John Sleath, who is a race engine builder based in Yorkshire somewhere – not far from you and may save you the hassle/uncertainty of buying in the US. John should be able to tune any car to the BHP you are after

HTH

BTW: You and I worked together at Washwood Heath many, many years ago. I remember you telling me that you had a Pantera, so it’s good to see that you are still around and still have got the car

ETA: Try posting this question in the Mustang section

I reckon it must be GW and if so I will bet you are telling the same jokes smile. I sold the engine to a GT40 owner a year ago it was extreme to say ther least. Too much for a trip to Le mans.I see you still have the car well done. Thanks for the recommendation and keep in touch.

Hey John, get on the internet and search 'World Products', they supply built crate motors, including a 427ci stroker based on a new Windsor block, 500hp with ally heads....link....should do the job!

So you still have the Pantera..i thought you had sold it.
Just a word of caution on buying from the US...if something goes wrong, you cannot exactly pop the motor back to them! I bought a new 392 stroker from Ford Racing, crate motor, rated at 430hp and 460lbs torque and had to have it rebuilt after 1500km due to a bad imbalance. The rebuild was done by Roger Brotton, and RealSteel, it is a lovely smooth and powerful motor now. maybe I just got a monday morning motor, and at the time Ford did not offer a warranty on competition motors, now however they offer a 12 month warranty.
As to finding a Cleveland, good luck in your search, very hard to find now.
