I have purchased a recent RX-8 and am having some engine management light issues with it. I have had it at t he dealers who told me it was a catalytic problem and needed replacing. Decided to get a second opinion so a catalytic cleaner was passed through the fuel mixture which seems to have temporarily resolved the problem. There is still a strong fuel smell coming from the car when idling and am going to get an emissions test. Has anyone had this problem and managed to resolve it?

RX-8's are known for going through cats at an alarming rate , possibly due to the oil used in combustion

I would buy a new cat and a decat and then just fit the cat for mots

Its nothing to do with oil at all.
If the car is used on short runs and not booted unburned fuel is caught in cat, sometimes it can ignite blowing the cat up and in some cases catching the car alight.

My Dad just sold his RX 8. One problem that can set off the light is the fuel filler not being sealed/ closed properly. I know my Dad had a few snags.
I expect changing coils/ plugs will sort you out but best get yourself over to an RX8 website otherwise you will be subjected to the doom and gloom of what people heard in the pub about oil usage, the cats failing every 2 minutes and terrible fuel economy.biglaugh

Having just looked into getting an RX-8 this sounds farmiliar..

There was a recall for fuel leak...
10-8-2005 (build 28-7-03 to 1-7-2005
"10-8-2005 (build 28-7-03 to 1-7-2005): Possible fuel leak (check exact VINs on Recalls Database). (TSB to fit heat shield between exhaust system and fuel tank) "
http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/apps/recalls/default.a...

Also if the car is stationary for a long time with the revs running high the exhaust ports of the engine may get damaged and in turn damaged the CAT ( dont understand this just remembered it)

decided against one after reading a LOT of horror stories frown

Thanks for the info, am looking on the RX-8 site at the moment. The thing is that they are amazing cars to drive. Ah! Well, if only every car was as reliable as a Fiesta!

Got an emissions test today and guess what? The emissions would not pass the MOT. Mechanic suggested a faulty lambda sensor.

Not sure what my next move should be - hate to go through the expense of guessing what the problem is.

Have you been to a main dealer? They are more familiar with RX8s than most Indys.

Rensis + decat + overfuelling = 4ft flames on gear change. It wasn't quite worth 7mpg, but it was close.

That one in particular needed a remap after some tweaks, so I was informed by the owner.

I agree with this.

Most likely problems are coil packs and/or cat.

They are great cars to drive. Hopefull you can get yours sorted and make the most of it.

Got a diagnostic from a local dealer who said that it was the cat but I was sceptical as I had heard a few stories about them. Another mechanic who did a diagnostic said it could be the lambda sensor and it was worth fitting one. Not sure what to do now.

What is the mileage? It is generally good practice to change the coils and leads at around 30-40k (see my profile for costs if you do it yourself) as incomplete combustion is bad for the engine and cat.

In your shoes I would change these as a matter of course if they have not been done, as you will eventually end up knackering a new cat otherwise. Then look at a lambda sensor and then a cat if the problem persists, also don't pay dealer prices for the cat, you can get a decent hi-flow job for about £4-500.

There is a website in the USA that specialises in parts for the RX8. Rotary something I cant remember, but my Dad bought the coils/ leads on it for not much over £130

If you are driving round with knackered coils, you're also likely to cause premature wear leading to loss of compression.

Coils and leads for £130 wont be any good! You need to go careful, as you will only be jumping from the hypothetical frying pan straight into a raging fire! Only buy genuine coils! And make sure they are the latest ones as they will last longer I can supply you with the p/n if you like

I bought genuine coils from america with 10MM magnecour leads all in for just over 200 quid, but i can't remember the name of the company off hand.i think i found them through a link on one of the rotary sites.
The best thing to do is join the website, that gives you discount in various parts dealers like MRP which could pay for the membership in one go.as well as lots of advice.

I bought mine from Rosenthal Mazda in the US for about that price, but mazdarotaryparts have 4 coils and leads for around £230 at the moment.
