E60 / 61 M5 Oils??

Like the rest of you i like to have oil in the garage ready for a top up when the idrive 'bongs'. When i bought the car the owner gave me a can of Castrol Formula RS Race 10w-60 of which there is 1 litre remaining. I have heard that this oil is now discontinued but was very good and actually aided engine life. The 'edge' stuff which replaced it doesnt seem to get as good reviews. Anyone heard different?

If i cant get Formula RS anymore is it worth getting the oil changed completely so that its a perfect match to whatever spare i get next? I have no idea if mixing the oils will make any difference at all as they are both Castrol and both 10w-60, i just dont want to do myself over by damaging the car.

Castrol Formula RS Race is actually the old name for Castrol Edge Sport.

This is the wrong product. You should be using Castrol TWS.

Edge/TWS is the same thing. TWS only stood for the viscosity.

it comes in two varieties, Edge + Edge sport. Quite what 'Edge' it gives you, I have no idea.

For what its worth, Sport is not the approved LL oil for BMW, you need the other, without the 'Sport' in the name.

Did the previous owner know his onions? Sounds as though he went for the cheaper oil.

Yes but Edge is different to the Edge Sport variant. Only use plain Edge.

Nope, only put 1ltr in when the car tells you to do so. Too much oil is far worse than too little.

Yes! I always do mine at around half interval, mines every 25k kms so in or around 12-13k kms
