Anyone used Halford's 'We fit' service?
Discussion
Just noticed the rear brake light's out my Outback and having looked online for bulbs noticed Halfords fit them for £3.99.
I know this is an easy job, but just wondered if anyone's used the service?
Do you need to book in a slot or can you just tip up, buy your bulb and get the nearest YTS trainee to fit the thing?

Turn up and ask, at any time of day there'll be at least two people who are competent. Usually be able to go out and fit it straight away (only delay is if all the fitters are serving), no problem, we're always happy to do it.
Can't remember anything about that car in particular, but shouldn't take five minutes.

Cheers Sam, seems easy enough. Can't remember anything about that car in particular, but shouldn't take five minutes.

I had one of them change the indicator bulb on the Megane... grazed knuckles and everything! Sufficed to say, he worked hard for that £3.99 extra.

If only.. The fitters see precisely not one penny of the fitting charge! He was (and frequently I am) getting grazed knuckles for the same money as he'd have got standing at the parts desk..

No worries. I've worked there for more than two years - we're more than happy to go out and do it

I've seen kids, well.. 16yr or so out in the carpark with a box of tools with the bonnet up on a car. Not sure on this idea.

I've no problem with them doing it if they know what they're doing, but if you ask which bulb they look at you with a blank face, and if you ask if they've got more stock of something, you get the same vacant look.
But, there are some that know what they're on about, which is good.

They have a manual which tells them which cars they can do and which they can't (Possibly down to bulbs being a b
d to change and requiring reomval of parts (Toyota Avensis!!!)
Yeah, our Intranet tells us. Some are due to excessive part removal, some because corrosion can mean you'll destroy things getting to the bulb - but most stores, mine included, will fit into anything, so you're usually alright!

Got them to fit the roof rack and enormous roof box in their car park last summer. I worried that the chap might fall against the car on his step ladder but he didn't, and in fact did a good job. Cost me about £15-£20 I think which wasn't too bad considering the roof box was too big to go inside the car and could only be transported home on the top of the car, making me a "captive" to any charges they might wish to apply. That and the car is bloody high, making the job more than a 5-minute one.

I'd be interested in what your intranet says about changing the sidelight on a 2003 WRX. I had to remove the entire headlight to do mine, so an easier way would be much appreciated.garycat said:

On complex stuff or where there's a particular method that makes things easier, it does sometimes give instructions - I'll check it out when I'm in tomorrow night and let you know! Possible that there'll be nothing since it's not a car we'd see often, but you never know.McSam said:
