This will be our last stop on our Hong Kong/Vietnam trip, staying just 2 nights. Can anyone recommend a hotel, has to be centrally located and not Park Hyatt prices as we've already gone a bit silly at some other destinations; top of the list at present is the Caravelle Hotel...

Any recommendations would be greatly received!

Cheers

Use TA all the time mate but for some reason I'm rapidly falling out of love with it! I'd prefer personal recommendations from people on here if anyone has any...

We stayed at the Asia Ruby which was central, cheap and clean with very OK rooms. No restaurant but you don't need that.

Five years ago I stayed at the Rex hotel in the centre of HCMC. Slap bang in the middle, and lots of history. THe American generals stayed there during the war, and it's where the main character in Nelson DeMilles "Up Country" stays when he first lands in 'nam. I think there's a scene in the terrace bar in "The Quiet American" with Michael Caine as well. It's got historic charm shall we say. My room was a bit cramped and grotty, but worth it for the feel of the place. It was being revamped while I was there so don't know what it's like now. Go on the latest reviews of the place.

Rex is a good call, I went to the roof top bar they have a few times when I was there.

I forget the name of where I stayed but it was just round the corner and was one of the oldest colonial hotels, so had a private court yard etc and was very nice in an old fashioned way and not to expensive.

IIRC the room was a bit grotty, was booked as part of a tour so didn't pay much attention. Was inside (no window) but clean. I'm guessing a slightly more expensive room would be a good place to stay.

The rooftop bar is worth a visit anyway even if you are not staying, fun watching the mopeds below in an evening with a nice breeze. Quite expensive (western prices?) though.
