iirc,

the speed cam markings are for the fixed cam just out of shot.

Arrive deprived said that the 2 gatsos in that area will be removed when the road workss finish.

Translation is summat like Big Stone Head which refers to the large lump of rock or "head" which has been tunnelled to take the coast road.

Pen is head: maen is stone; mawr is big.

Quite descriptive, don'tcha think?

Enjoy

I can't help feeling that a lot of Welsh place names are due to the locals taking the piss out of English cartographers.

Cartographer: "What's that called?"
Local (in Welsh): "A Big Mountain".
Cartographer writes "Mynydd Mawr" on map...

Only trouble with this theory is I haven't noticed any places down on the map as "Twp Sais".

Just looked at the webcams.....

Does Wales close on Monday nights, or did someone set off the air raid siren ........?

Ah! But MBH, Just think! If no-one is there because of fear! They don't have to spend money on road maintenance or on REAL policemen! NOW that's a REAL saving for road safety isn't it?

Pity about the tourist trade though!

I have noticed a couple of times that the cameras show quiet roads but when I then go onto the A55, it appears busier than the cameras lead me to believe.

Some time ago, a relative was coming here for a meal so I checked the road cameras and saw low traffic levels. He arrived late and blamed the traffic volume.

Either he was lying ...............

Funny you should mention that... there was a Victorian Extravaganza in Llandudno this weekend hence lots of tourists and lovely caravans...
We live just by the A55 in Rhos and could see it stationary from presumably the Black Cat filling station to all the way past the rainbow bridge towards Abergele from about 4pm. I had a look at the cameras maybe half an hour later and it showed free moving traffic everywhere. Radio 2 was reporting mental traffic towards Deeside and on to the M56 but the cameras were showing next to nothing there either. Maybe they're using a looped video

Phil.

There's a 'contact us' link here:
www.nwales-traffic.co.uk/english/contact/default.asp

...but I wouldn't expect anything interesting back from them. The simple fact is the A55 is no longer sufficient for the volume of traffic on it. The camera locations seem to miss all the usual trouble spots for snarl-ups. I'm up and down the A55 every day so you get to know quite quickly where there'll be trouble. There should be crawler lanes on the hilly bits to avoid the caravan induced traffic jams over the summer. Also, has anyone else noticed - you can tell when you're back in Wales. The standard of lane discipline there is shocking (and that's saying something). People happily pottering along in lane 2 at 50 mph oblivious to the traffic queue behind them.

Phil.

I didn't think there were any speed limits over 50MPH left in Wales!

Whilst we are on the subject of Wales, a new Gatso has been erected on Rhyl prom, so look out!

No camera in it - yet!

Pen also means top, and in the case of Penmaenmawr might mean in relation to the village 'On top of a big stone(rock).'

You're right about lane discipline on the A55. Half of them are just dozey tw@t$ and the other half seem to be of the "The speed limit is 70 and I'm obeying it and so I don't need to move over" mentality.

My other gripe is drivers who are not thinking ahead and so find themselves approaching a slower vehicle and feel they have the right to just pull out in front of faster approaching vehicles with minimal warning.

Then surely that should be a 30MPH limit according to Herr Brunstrom?
