I need a low insurance group (3 or less, appalling area as far as insurance is concerned) family car, 4/5 doors basic car. 10k miles a year. Budget £5k.

Boring I know, but needs must.

Thinking Skoda Fabia or Seat Ibiza, which seem to fit the bill.

Collective wisdom of PH suggest any improvements?

Have had an Ibiza in the family for a while now, good cars, the Cordoba may be slightly better on insurance since it’s a less obvious choice (if you don't mind the slightly odd looks). The 1.9 TDI unit has a good mix of fuel economy and performance, though our 1.4 TDI has averaged over 60mpg which would be worth looking into if you are doing high mileage.

Fiat Panda can be had in group 1, it's surprisingly not bad inside. I nearly got one.

My wife has just bought a Fabia 1.2 HTP (High Torque Performance!) They do a 60BHP version,(with 80torques) group 1 insurance, 08' plate with 11,000mls cost 5,500. Get the estate if you have kids.

Great little car and much bigger on the inside than it looks.

It has made me look at the new Fabia vRS

How basic?

Aygo / C1 / 107?

Nissan Pixo / Suzuki Alto?

Fiat 500 / Panda?

Daihatsu Sirion / Subaru Justy / Perodua Myvi?

Mini One? (older)

Polo/Ibiza/fabia are the same car.

Personally I would look at a fiat 500. Clearly the best small car around at the moment.

Did the same search a few weeks ago for my little sis. After looking at lots of Fiestas/Clios/Polos/etc, she ended up with a Panda. Surprisingly roomy, economical and good fun to chuck around.

I'd recommend the Panda as already stated, or perhaps something more....

leftfield?

Mitsubishi Colt CZ.

Insurance between Grp 3 and 6, available in 1.1, 1.3, 1.5 and 1.5T

Excellent fuel economy and even the lowly 1.1 is quite nippy.

Classic insurance available and the 1.3 engine's good for 40-ish to the gallon. wink

Volvo S40/V40 1.9tdi? Plenty about for much less than budget, and you can either spend a tad more on insurance, but I think you may find they're pretty cheap to insure anyway.

bks. There is another car, cheaper than the 500, more practical and cheaper to insure. Oh, and won't make you look like a homosexual.

Panda, that's what you want. Same car, why buy the expensive one in the frock?

Seat Ibiza would get my vote too. Solid, basic little cars with little to go wrong.

Strange, petrols are affordable insurance, diesels aren't! I'm not sure I understand insurance....

How about a Hyundai Atos 1.1 Prime?!

We've got one as a runaround and it's surprisingly roomy inside and even driving like your hair's on fire you get 55mpg. Can't hit the 120kph limit on motorways unless favourable conditions join you, but it's part of the fun!

You would get a mint 206 HDi 1.4 for a couple of grand less than your budget, maybe even a funky SW model.

And with £30 road tax and 70mpg you'd have both the £2000 change and saved monthly disposable cash to spunk on something for the weekend.... MX5, 328i etc...

Inspired, I think. I'd thought of them as tiny, but they look like they ought to do the job, if a bit slowlysmile And the insurance/tax is nicely on the low side.

Plenty around, as well.

They are tiny on the outside but oddly like a TARDIS on the inside, way more cleverly packaged than pretty much anything else on the market with tons of room for 4 properly-sized people. The boot holds much more than its floor space should allow it to. Get a 100HP for driving fun too. Not that I'm biased towards them or anything.
