Unexpected bedroom project
Discussion
Hi All,
It's been a while since i've been in this part of the forum! (a one year old and new job has been keeping me occupied).
At the backend of last 2009 the wife and I managed to finish our lounge and had no plans to do any more work in 2010 but after returning from holiday in Novermber to discover we'd been burgled I decided to make a start on the bedroom in order to get rid of the finger print dust! (+ hopefully make the wife will feel more comfortable in there)
Me being me I can't just strip wallpaper and repaint inside I embarked on a slightly larger project of ripping down the walk in wardrobe and rebuilding it with a proper false wall!
Before (with one of the TVs that were stolen):

In the first weekend I took down the wardrobe and with the help of a neighbour and installed a stud wall.
Then I have run all the cables (new circuit going in) ready for the electrian - including five double sockets!
Our virgin connection is terminated into the wardrobe and I have cat5 running to the spare room and downstairs so i've made sure that's hidden in the wall. At the same time i've run two additional cables to where the TV is to make use of LGs internet functionaility.
False wall in:

The TV is straight but the top of the alcove on the left hand side needs adjusting slightly (5mm out):

Power and CAT5 termimations (left hand side as you go into the wardrobe:

Power and CAT5 above the TV with spare socket to give me access to install a keane IR sensor to control Virgin box and DVD inside the wardrobe:

Cable entry from the TV needs tidying up:

A little more plasterboarding to do (I ran out) and I need to adjust the alcove above the TV then we'll be ready to start painting inside the wardrobe.
Next steps:
A little update - plasterboarding is now finished ready for taping/filling.
Sparky is coming over on Saturday to finish the new ring main/install the sockets.
I've got to strip all the wallpaper in the room/wardrobe and fill in some old screw holes/cracks, fit a new door and skirting to the wardrobe and i'll be ready to paint! (does it ever end?)

Cable for the Virgin box

3 sockets / 6 CAT5 points (2 to the spare room, 2 to the lounge and 2 for the bedroom TV/DVD)

I know just need to find a wall mount for the router (and get rid of the 4 gang adapters!)

NEXT: The sparky arrives:
We have power!!
I've spent today with the sparky connecting everything up (he did the power and I did the CAT5) and i've made a start on stripping the wallpaper

LG TV now connected to the net

Nice to get rid of all the 4 gang adapters (just need some hollow skirting to finish everything off once the wall mount for the router arrives)

Control panel and fused spur for the new alarm system

All of this work took us to early December at which point we decided to call it quits until after Christmas (no time/money etc).
Money and time constraints in January meant we had to wait until February for work to recommence...

Money and time constraints in January meant we had to wait until February for work to recommence...
Work kind of ground to a halt in December due to the lack of funds/time, then last weekend my brother in law came over and fitted the door into the wardrobe.
This has allowed me to complete the following:

The whole above the TV is for a Keene IR sensor which connects to the Virgin box and DVD player in the wardrobe.
I ended up removing the existing light switch as I needed to put a new deeper back box on ready for a new switch.
Colour wise we're going for white ceiling, cream walls and then chocolate suede on the TV wall which will hide any small imperfections with the jointing tape. Inside the wardrobe it will be a simple white to maximise the light in there.
Jobs to be completed:
This has allowed me to complete the following:
- Tape joint all the joins
- Fit new skirting boards around the new false wall
- Fit door architrave
- Miscoat the walls and the wardrobe internals

Looks grand!!! Good work with the hidden wiring too, I love the 'built in' look TV's but absolutely hate it when people go to the trouble of doing false walls etc, only to leave trailing wire all over the show!!
Looks absolutely spot on!
Wires are my pet hate! They'll be a few on show in the wardrobe itself but as we won't be able to see them I can't complain.Looks absolutely spot on!
When I spec'd everything up I realised it would be safer to run loads of new sockets on a new circuit (luckily fuse box is just below) instead of the previous daisy chain affair that was in the wardrobe (single socket).
Then while I built the wall it made sense to tidy up the CAT5 I had terminating in there already properly (easy peasy).
I'm tempted to pick up a cheap amp and ceiling speakers from ebay and hide that in the wardrobe as well.

Looks brilliant - good work.
I really really wish I had the skills / bottle to do this. But I'd end up demolishing the house if I started
I'd never built a stud wall until this project! A neighbour giving me a helping hand and all was well. I'd also never used jointing tape etc until the weekend - take your time and things generally work out ok.I really really wish I had the skills / bottle to do this. But I'd end up demolishing the house if I started

On the other hand I can't stand sanding woodwork as it just feels like a thanksless task, I much rather construct something! (Previous efforts included an AV rack which i'm still rather proud of).
Nice going. Just wondering, why didn't you install a Kinect in there so you can control without a controller (I think they can be used to control DVDs etc)? That said, I can understand why you might not have - in a particularly romantic moment, you might end up starting the DVD player, fast forward, rewinding, increasing the volume, decreasing the volume, changing channels etc.

Do you mean the Kinect for a 360? It could result in some interesting playback

I've gone with the Keene IR repeater which is nice and discreet and means I can use the standard remotes (although i'll probably get a new Harmony at some point - I had a Harmony One downstairs but that was stolen as well).
liking the overall project-
just a couple of questions/ observations and ideas though
Is that a cable coming out of the wall and into the alarm panel,(looks like twin and earth in the picture) is the alarm panel off its own supply and is the spur as far away as it seems?
Has the spark fitted rcd/rcbo to your consumer unit?
I don't know where you are upto now in terms of finishing the project but I would also consider relocating the swith that is on the left of the door to the right hand side or into the wardrobe, as it is now the door needs to be closed, use switch, step back and then open door. The other lght switch could also be altered to become a two way switch if it isn't already, allowing a second switch by the bed
just a couple of questions/ observations and ideas though

The alarm is off the same (new circuit) as all the new circuits with a new RCD into the consumer unit. just a couple of questions/ observations and ideas though

The reason for the location was a slight oversight by me! I'd run the cables for the network down the right hand side of the wall (When looking at it) and didn't want to risk any damage by locating a new socket for the spur on that side... the other bit I forgot was I should have allowed for the twin and earth for the alarm to be flushed into the wall (i'd already built the stud wall before the alarm arrived! It's a learning curve and i'll know to do things in a slightly different order next time!
Regarding the light switch... there's no room on the TV side of the wall (either outside or inside the wardrobe) to locate the lightswitch due to the stud work.
Where it's located seems like a logical(ish) place as we're not going in and out of the wardrobe frequently (once in the morning/once a night type of thing).
2nd switch by the bed might be very useful - how easy would it be to run the 2nd switch?
Cheers Andy.
The end is in sight now which is good. I hoping to get all the woodwork sanded on Saturday and then undercoated.
With a bit of luck I can also get the ceiling painted as well.
Planning to order the carpet at the weekend for fitting in 2/3 weeks so I need to get all the walls painted properly as well.

Another busy weekend:
1) Walls painted - 2 x Magnolia
2) Woodwork undercoated and glossed including wardrobe door and above the stair box
3) First coat on the feature wall
4) Hanging rails re-installed in the wardrobe.

Tonights jobs:
1) Final coat on the feature wall
2) Start moving stuff back into the room
I also need to touch up some of the gloss (ran out of masking tape) so will do that one night this week.
Hopefully get the carpet laid by the end of next week.
Cheers,
Phill

I am SO fecked off that I only put 1 Cat5 cable in to my bedroom and new living area in the extension.
I didn't realise that everything nowadays has a cat5 connection for some fancy $hit that you can't live without.....b
ks.
It seems that a lot of firmware is pushed out this way these days! Then Blu-ray with their waste of time "Live" features need it as well.I didn't realise that everything nowadays has a cat5 connection for some fancy $hit that you can't live without.....b
