Starting my diet, have given up the booze and want to lose a stone before the summer.

I love steamed veggies and grilled chicken/meat/fish.

However i'm a "wet eater" and have to have a suace of some sort. Can you foodies point me in the right direction of some lowish fat but tasty sauces to accompany?

Home made veg-based sauces. Don't go for the shop bought ones... they have a lot of sugar in them.

couple of examples...
Tomato & basil
Roasted red pepper

you can use chilli, garlic, other herbs and veggies to vary them.

Salsa.

In its basic form this is ripe tomatoes, onion, chilli and fresh coriander (all finely chopped).

Mint, pineapple, apple and mango can all go in.

I add a bit of sugar to mine if the tomatoes aren't particularly sweet (as now).

Just don't finish them off with a good knob of butter at the end like I do lick

There were a few suggestions the other day for some Italian type sauces in a thread (sauce for sausages?)

Low fat creme fraiche and mushrooms is a good one. Just fry the mushrooms a bit and add the creme fraiche and warm it gently. It'll work on chicken, pork, or beef.

I have a Ponzu Sauce on grilled fish/steamed veg quite a lot - I make it with the juice of two limes and one lemon, three tablespoons of Soy, one tablespoon of Roasted Sesame oil and plenty of finely grated ginger - bloody lovely.
