Hire cars - pricing structure?
Discussion
I need a hire car in July for ~ 26 days. It needs to be a 7 seater. I'll be flying in (and out) of Heathrow airport. 2 adults and 3 kids (aged 3-6years) flying in with 2 strollers and 2 or 3 big suitcases. Then staying at parents place. 7 seats for driving around with parents whilst here.
Anyone know how they work out the pricing?
- Its cheaper to hire for 28 days than it is for 26 days.
- I need 3 booster seats for kids - Its almost as cheap to buy your own than to hire them.
- automatics tend to be so much more than manuals.
- Airports charge a little for "airport fees"
Whats the cheapest in Heathrow?

Google 'Car Hire 3000' for the best rates - anywhere in the world.
Job jobbed.
I just used them to hire for 16 days in Thailand as they were cheapest, though I dont like the way they phone you to sell you extra insurance if you dont tick the box they try to make you tick when you book.Job jobbed.
They actually put the excess up to 5000 baht in Thailand with Thai rentacar, yet I normally use Faster hire and its only 3000 baht. The insurance was more than the excess and you had to pay and claim back later.

It'll always be cheaper to hire for longer as the cost per transaction for each rental is the same (roughly).

Usually for rentals over 14 days it'll be cheaper to buy your own.
- automatics tend to be so much more than manuals.
Due to the Americans not being able to drive manuals and anyone from a country which drives on the right not wanting to deal with changing gear on the wrong side as well (demand/supply).
- Airports charge a little for "airport fees"
Usually as concession charges for car hire firms are a large percentage of their revenue.
The best rates will probably be available by phoning the rental desk directly where you are picking up and playing the off against each other. Check the comparison sites first for a benchmark but be aware of the exclusions where you are getting quotes from a broker.

Not when hiring in Thailand. Thai rentacar was always a fair bit mor going direct to them, but if you use a broker its cheaper. fThe best rates will probably be available by phoning the rental desk directly where you are picking up and playing the off against each other. Not always. 7 days for a 7 seater in July was over £650 (Espace cited). Premiercarjet was about £460 (Galaxy cited).
Also for the Canary Islands, Autoreisen seem cheapest.
Not heard of them before but just had a look as i need to hire a car, is there a easy way to get a online quote in the normal fashion? Also for the Canary Islands, Autoreisen seem cheapest.
Or do i have to work out the daily rate / wait for them to email me back?
OP sorry for the slight hijack.

Autoreisen only seem to work the Canary Islands www.autoreisen.es and quote online.
www.carjet.com or www.premiercarjet.com, just ask for a quote on the website per usual.

Thanks for the replies. That car hire 3000 seems OK, (I've yet to check the terms and conditions though)
It just seems that the pricing structure is unfathomable.
quite. It just seems that the pricing structure is unfathomable.
I've a brand new Audi A4 TDI hirecar parked outside. I'm currently travelling on business, so am booked via the business.
Cost? under £26/day.
If I turned up and booked this personally what would it cost?
Car hire companies obviously want as much money as possible out of their fleet, but sometimes this results in oddities...
