I'm starting to like Whiskey - just a small glass now and then. But, neither I, nor any of my friends know much about it, other than there are a few different types e.g. Single Malt, Bourbon etc...

How did you get to know about all the various types, which are best for flavour and so on? How did you find out - read books (there seem to be loads), go on tasting sessions (any recommended?), are any of the manufacturer websites any good?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers smile

Buy a different kind every time, and discuss what you think of each one?

I've normally been given different ones as presents, or have tried different ones when out drinking with friends or when round others houses for meals etc.

Caol Ila is the one I'm drinking very slowly at the moment. Only a small (ish) glass every week or two, but it is incredibly earthy. I found after my first sample that too much of it and it will be seeping from your pores the following day. Quite a potent, but very enjoyable single malt.

Buy a copy of this:

Read the PH thread mentioned earlier.

Make notes on those you have tried and when you buy something new don't always go for something similar to one you know you like. Most whiskys over £25 are good and many are quite different so just experiment and pick bottles at random (or on recommendation from above thread).

An easy and cheap way to try different malts is to go to a pub that specialises in them.

Agreed. Any decent whisky barman should be able to guide you through regions and finishes.
