Been idly considering one of these for a while. My brother picked up a late low mileage example car and it really is a cracker. Almost the perfect daily.

Saw a very nice example in the classifieds the other day but in the time it took me to decide to go and see it (wasn't really looking for a car so took a while to check out insurance and find a bit out about the car) the damn thing sold.

Now of course I am checking the classifieds every day but most are ropey, high miles, rusty, or abused.

Are there many nice ones left? And what sort of money should I expect to pay?

If I had one I would offer to swap for your lovely classic 900!. Ive been out of those for a while and in E36s and Corrado VR6s. Kinda miss them..

The best below average mile(50k-100k mile) E36 328 Sport are still fetching around 3-4k. If what you are looking for is full BMW/specialist history and factory spec. But good cars are available for well under 3k now, just harder to find at this price level. If you are willing to look at a non-Sport/323 then about 2k should be enough.

Cheers smile

I thought long and hard because the obvious solution for me would be to replace the Saab with an e36, and the MX-5 (eventually) with a Chimaera or TVR S.

I just can't bear to part with the Saab though, so the e36 would replace the MX-5. So 2 quick saloons and no sports car/convertible silly The MX-5 is very very competent and we had a great driving holiday thrashing it all over Yorkshire sans roof last summer, but it hasn't really got under my skin like the Saab. I can always pick up another one if I am missing roofless motoring too much!

My brother's Sport coupe was about £4k I think but it was an absolute belter - a Lux with the offset wheels, just refurbed, only 90k miles or so. The one I saw looked almost as good, e46 wheels which I would have changed for the original Sport wheels, but up at 3k. Sadly I was too late. Happy to pay 3k for a good 'un. Has to be a 328 really, my dad has a 323 convertible and it's OK but not quick enough. I would be looking at 3.0 M3s if I could stretch the budget a bit and the servicing wasn't so much more. I know it's just cosmetic but I much prefer the look of the Sport over the standard car.

Having said that, there is a quite tidy looking touring in the classifieds at the moment!

or look at an E36 Convertible with a hard top? plenty around, before they firm up in price for the spring

Tempting, but it would feel like I'd bought a car that wasn't quite as good as it could be IYSWIM wink Does the hard top make it any less wobbly? Mind you, if the hard top was on I'd miss out on those crisp winter mornings...

I have one, make me an offer wink 78k, silver, split rims, Leather etc.

I didn't look long and found one up for sale well above what it was really worth. Went along and got 20% off, so it was more inline with the genuine price. Keep hunting.

what you lose in ultimate handling through stiffness of chassis, you more than make up for with the roof down feeling...summer not far away now

dont be put off by high miles. Buy on condition not mileage. I'd rather have a high miler thats had tonnes done to it than a low miler thats not been looked after.

Hence why i bought a good condition 145,000 miler!!

if your looking at anything 100,000 miles plus look for suspension refresh work or buy one on 90,000 and budget £1000 to have it done!

Just bought one a couple of days ago. Totally rust free, un-abused, standard and with FBMWSH!

Ok it does have 135k on the clock but drives sweet and for less than 2k, a pretty good deal.

Oh and its on a '96 so it comes with an LSD! Lots of sideways fun!

I just sold a very straight one (black) for just over 2k.

Just be very patient, and these cars will come up for sale every so often. As advised, buy on condition and do the usual E36 checks (water pump, rust, bushes etc.) They are big engine cars and there's a lot of fuss about petrol prices at the moment, so you can expect a few more to come up for sale IMO.

Good luck!
