I've had several cars that had well over 120k Miles on them before I moved on and all of these cars were servicable and traded-in/sold-on, so I don't consider 75,000 to be a high mileage on a UK car nevermind a yank behemoth.

But I think it's time for a conspiracy theory:

Perhaps the motor industry is playing 'management of expectations' in anticipation of future plans to render cars obsolete in some way by the time they reach 100k, in order to (a) maximise profits, (b) keep motorists abreast of the most recent safety widgets, (c) maximise profits, (d) prevent people running old vehicles which are 'environmental doombringers' and (e) maximise profits.

I should get out more...

Waste of money. I've had 11 Cavaliers as taxis, all purchased at 100k with FSH. Double-manned them, on the road 24 hours a day. Used Vauxhall semi-synthetic, every 6k. Never gave any trouble, all did over 300k, highest 426k. Interiors and steering wheels wore out first!

I've run an Austin Montego 2.0 Estate (much better car thna it was given credit for, or maybe I got a good one?) and a Volvo 480 (ditto - maybe I'm just not very demanding?) to >110k miles each.

Both were going fine when replaced - "secret" was following the manufacturer's service intervals, and generally looking after them. I don't think special oil would make any difference.

So why did I replace them? Montego - wrote it off, 480 - wife couldn't reach the pedals!
