6 years ago after I passed my test, we bought a Rover 25 (hold your sniggers) from a main dealer. I was young and naive and pretty much bought the first thing I saw. The car was about a year old with 3,000 miles on the clock. The car had one previous owner, Rover themselves.

On the test drive, I notice a sticker on covering the instrument dial saying something along the lines of "the mileage of this vehicle is under investigation, do not release until concluded". When I asked the salesman he said "they all have one of them on, it doesn't mean anything".

Thought nothing of it, sale went through, drove the car for a couple of years and sold it on.

Did I buy a clocked car?

who cares?, it was 6 years ago - what are you going to do about it now. Move On.

contrary to your username you seem a bit of a slow mover/thinker.

I think the mistake you've made is waiting six years to ask the question. Generally it's best to ask these questions before you buy.

My experience of Rover salesmen going back to the early 00s would be that they would tell you black was white to make a sale. I was promised an extended warranty. Lucky I insisted on some paperwork because when I inevitably needed it I found it wasn't registered with the warranty company!

Jesus, I'm interested as to whether I did or didn't buy a clocked car. I'm not going to take it further, merely interested in whether this was a possibility.

Apologies that I interupted more pressing matters.

Back to the debate on 'would you overtake a funeral prossession'.

Well if they had reason to put the sticker on, then there's a possiblilty that the mileage was incorrect.

I don't think we can make a call one way or the other.

I think you may have bought a clocked Rover 25 six years ago.

I know that PH is full of people who apparently know everything... but you're really stretching that knowledge base with this particular question.

However, to help you I've just asked my OH whether your Rover from 6 years ago was clocked and she can confirm it was, the real mileage was closer to 22K miles.

I can validate this information because according to her she actually DOES know everything. smile

I've seen a few dealer cars where the mileage sticker says to 'assume incorrect'

Isn't it just a way of covering themselves?

I can confirm you definately did not buy a clocked car. Who in their right mind would drive a Rover 25 more than 3000 miles in a year.

Correct, its common practice. I wouldn't worry.

Errr, me! IIRC I did 20000 miles in 18 months, and it was a perfectly pleasant place to do them smile

+1 a lot of main dealers stick them on all their second hand stock to cover their arse. Certainly 6 years ago it was policy at all reg Vardy / pendragon sites. (little blue and White sticker over the odometer.)

Don't worry about it, not likely to affect much now anyway.
