Mr and Mrs LT are going to Cardiff for a night, but fancy staying somewhere for a second night, somewhere roughly speaking, on the way home to Essex.
Looking for suggestions of towns to visit mainly, but if anyone can suggest a hotel, all the better. very roughly speaking, the M4 corridor, but will venture further.
Just a nice place to have a wander round, nice pub or two for a drink, somewhere to eat in the evening.

I was thinking maybe Windsor, never been before. Any other suggestions?

Windsor is a good choice, plenty to do during the day and some nice hotels in the vicinity. Budget for hotel?

Not far back from Cardiff, but Bath? More sights, hotels, restaurants, bars, shopping that you can shake a credit card at.

Marlborough could be an option, I will have a look.

Hotel budget is £150 absoluete tops. Fairly secure parking could be priority, depending which car I take.

Thanks for the Bath suggestion, but been there before.

Only if you intend to buy a house - apart from property prices Bath has pretty much normal prices (unless you get tourist-trapped).

The Oakley Court is just outside Windsor, rooms are within your budget (date dependant). Right on the river and a 5 minute drive to Windsor.

I was looking at this very hotel a little earlier, looked a good option. Thanks.

Wooton Basset and Hungerford are both nice towns with some nice non-chain hotels. Some lovely country houses round there too.

ETA: Forgot some hotels...

The Bear in Hungerford, http://www.thebearhotelhungerford.co.uk/ The three Swans in Hungerford, and the Vineyard in Newbury....

Henley: https://www.hotelduvin.com/hotels/henley-on-thames...

Reading wouldn't be first on your list of places to visit - but because the hotels are very much business hotels you can get some silly rates at weekends! Despite living in/near Reading my wife and I still take up this deal for a room and 7 course meal for £95 (plus booze) at least once per year: http://www.millenniumhotels.co.uk/millenniumreadin...

If you're a petrol head it has to be sunny swindon, jewel of the south!

We make cars here (unfasionable I know), but honda and bmw, (sorry, mini) have huge plants that you could drive past the outside of and look at. We also spearheaded the pharmaceutical packaging industry at catalent, and will have one of the first four drive though costa coffee's in the entire country. If you want more glamour then the magic roundabout could also be included on your tour, so special it features in its own calander, and don't forget that we're twinned with disneyland, in amreeca as well so you have the glamour and family friendly aspect to enjoy.

I would suggest the staying at the kings arms in wood street, old town (check out the reviews on trip advisor)

Remember, swindon is sooo good that when drunkenslapperstreetfightUKOK came to film for a night on the way to basildon they enjoyed it so much they stayed for an entire week! (and rather amusingly, (depending on your sense of humour) the cameraman got to sample the delights of our shiny new PFI hospital)
