Guys

I was going to use www.myhammer.co.uk to get someone to do some plastering for me. I don't know of anyone decent that can plaster, and have used this website before, and like the whole feedback part of it, so am stuck with anonymous quotes :P

my problem is, how on earth do you go about asking for a quote, and what to quote on.

We need the hallway/stairway plastering. its a really awkward shape, so hard to describe.
The ground and first floors are both 8ft tall... but here's a crumby paint-effort to explain;

so what do you think a plasterer would want? a description, an "x"ft square number, loads of photos?
and if you just do an area to plaster, do you take out the doors from it, or just the number of them?

I usually get a plaster to come round and look, that way he won't horrendously underquote on the job as will probably happen if you do it over the internet.

+1

For any job, get them round to quote. Anyone can pluck a figure from thin air.

problem is, I don't know any.

If I go to yellow pages, I would have no idea if I was being ripped off, and more importantly had a complete muppet, in which the plaster will fall off in a few days.

At least with myhammer.co.uk you get to see past feedback, and there is competition on there between tradespeople. Got some plumbing done previously on there and the guy was excellent, cheap and did a very thorough job

So just find a highly rated local plasterer on there and ask him to come round and quote?

ring half a dozen to come and quote. do they have a quick look and give a verbal price or figure on a scrap of paper, or do they take notes & measurements and post a typed & costed breakdown?

if they're all good and know their local market, the price spread should be quite narrow. discount any who deviate massively. when I had the whole house done, I had a pikey quote £40 per day plus materials! err, no! you can also ask for references from previous clients. any decent outfit will do this.

I usually decide which tradesmen to use based on their quote and my gut feeling about them - I.e. personable, knowledgeable, professional, etc. I am fairly clued up on most things but don't show it. any BS puts me off instantly.

a good place to get recommendations would be the regional sections on these forums. I found a painter/decorator recently through the yorkshire forum and their work was first rate.

Just use a site like myhammer where you get tradesman to come to YOU

I find if you call people out of the yellow pages sometimes they dont want the job if its too small or whatnot.

if you have 3-4 guys around to quote - and really quiz them on what will happen you should soon sort the wehat from the chaff.

I used the Rated People website a few years back. Got 3 guys quoting, and picked a top-notch plasterer.

Ha, your in west yorkshire.

I happen to know of a very decent bloke. Not sure he'll be "cheap" but he gets stuck in and does an excellent job.

I'll pm you his number in a bit.

Your profile doesn't accept emails.....you need to change it.

You only really need 3 quotes. the cheapest isn't usually the best.

Whereabouts in West Yorkshire are you?
I have a tame plasterer based in East Lancashire whom I can highly recommend. I'd be pleased to pass on contact details if you PM me.

If he is a friend you should at least let him know what he is up against.

Anybody just getting quotes hap hazard will be basically wasting the time of any decent tradesperson who quotes to do a proper job.

OP , please , dont even consider getting a price from somebody unless they see the job and you have done some research into their ability and experience .

hehe Us poor old spreads get a rough deal sometime.

You try icing a 12m2 cake to a perfectly smooth finish upside down and 9' off the floor without dropping a bit. laugh

If getting a cheap quote make sure that you have seen his other work,

before & after painting.
