I hate all 5-door cars

In my opinion, they all look like a serious design compromise. In every example I can think of, the 3-door is better looking than the 5-door. Anyone else have a similar prejudice? Or can anyone think of any 5-doors that look better than the 3-door equivalent?

The estate versions tend to look better than both (IMO or course).

Interesting picture bias there though - dynamic shots for the cars you like, boring flat shots for the ones you don't. Nice selection bias

I think you could level that accusation only at the BMW pic. The Kia is on a flat background in both pics and the Vauxhall is parked in front of a wall...

The old five door Megane looked nicer than the three door Megane. The square rear quarter light worked better than the rounded one on the three door.

Hmm, maybe, but I suspect they both look as awful as each other...

Alfa do quite a good job of hiding the rear doors on some of their cars, but the 3-door cars are still nicer IMO.

Mk4 golfs look about the same in 3 or 5 door. As do most golfs tbh

I almost always prefer the version with more doors. Just personal preference I suppose.

mk5/6 Golf look better in 5-door IMO. The wheelbase is too long and the doors too short on the 3-doors. While many seem to be designed with 3 doors then have two more added later, VW seemed to have done the reverse there.

Both my current Civic and previous Alfa 156 wagon have hidden rear door handles which helps a lot.

Yes, they are, but I don't think the Evo is even available as a 3-door is it?

I know I may be considered a bit weird for this (I have friends and stuff really) but the old Japanese liftbacks looked quite elegant in five door form.

By contrast the three door variants of each looked stubby at the back and lost the elegant roofline.

Is the boot on a saloon considered a door?

I always thought that 3/5 door referred to hatchback variants.

Maybe there is something to this. The door needs to have the right proportions, and that will depend on the original design.

I used to think 3 door hatchbacks looked better & would never consider a 5 door, but now I can't see the point.

Sleek designs, sports cars & coupes on the other hand are different, my only exception to this rule is the CLC.
