Cars you sold and saw ruined...
Discussion
Somethign on another thread prompted me to think about my poor MK1 Golf GTI (BRH 613X), bought from a bloke in the pub for I was working in whilst at college in about 89, cost £1500, not a minter but a lot of work by me and my dad had it looking superb, repained the body where it needed it, refurbished wheels and new tyres, obbligatory lowering kit but otherwise standard looking and all the mechanical foibles sorted, it looked like new.
I decided to sell it to finance travelling to the US to work on a summer camp a year or so later after many happy miles (and a few other activities...) in it, I loved it to bits, was my first quick car, so was sad to see it go, went for £2300 I seem to remember so got my money back and some extra for the time effort and what I spent on it.
My dad asked if anyone fancied it at work and it sold immediately, some knuckle dragger came round and thrashed it up and down the A34 and decided he would have it, picked it up and I went on my travels for four months, came back and my dad had found a car for me, a very late E reg Silver Capri Laser, 1.6.... after a Golf GTi that didnt weigh much with 110 bhp, a floppy old Capri packing 73 bhp, though it looked nice didnt do it for me so after a coupel of months I asked my dad how his mate got on with the Capri, basically it lasted a couple of months, thrashed to death, broken, broekn into, crashed and left with water coming in and was then scrapped, I was gutted as I was hoping to buy it back, bought another a few year later but it wasnt the same, even with a GTI Engineering 1.9 engine in.
My first car was still taxed until 2008, 1969 Capri, god knows what happened to that, hoping its off the road for renovation, that I would buy back if it still exists.

I remember about 9 years back seeing a car belonging to my mates Dad previous.
He'd part-x'd it - an F reg Lancia Delta HF Integrale 16v, red, with 25k on the clock and still all the plastic on the seats and door cars, for £1500, against a new Integra Type-R - so an 11 yr old Lancia, absolute mint condition, for £1500, in 1999.
I saw it one day at a service station, recognising the number plate, a quick call to my mate confirmed, but looked like it'd been used by a painter and decorator as his van - paint all over the back bumper, no back seats in, generally battered. A sorry sight!
(Integra responsible for sale was rolled through a hedge and has now been replaced with an Evo9.)

1972 VW Camper. Sold it, next time I saw it, it had a ridiculous permanent high-top on it. Looked like it was transporting a rowing boat.
1990 MR2. Sold it, 6 months later got an email from the buyer giving me a link to a youtube video where he documented the conversion in to an F360 replica. Not what I would have done, but it looked well-done and it invariably added a lot of value to the otherwise-dead '2.
1997 Calibra SE6 - totally factory when I sold it in 2002, then I saw it a year later with lexus-lights, big wheels, a huge exhaust and a faux-Touring car spoiler.

My first Jag was a 1986 Series III Soveriegn in gunmetal grey. Lovely. D265 ELF.
Had it for about 2 years and decided to look for a newer XJ40 so sold the Series III privately. It was already starting to bubble in the usual places but still looked presentable.
I saw it a year later in a pub carpark and was shocked at the state of the bobdywork. Every single panel on it had bubbly scabs breaking through, it was f
ked. The new owner had obviously never touched it.
Shame, nice car otherwise and I'd spent a fortune at the local stealers keeping it mechanically sound.

My brother had a Nova 1.2 Saloon as a first car (well done dad) that after three or four years of TLC he traded in for a Mk3 Cav SRi...couple of months later we were foraging for bits for one of my cars in scrapyard in the days before they had to recycle everything. There, amongst the many cars we spotted what was left of the shell of A605RFL (number plate still on it and unmistakable dodgy paint job) squashed in the middle of a three stacked pile of cars.
Quite a sorry sight.

I had an orion 16i ghia red 1988 ,lovely car ,sold it to a blond bird which she ragged
around for a while.
Didn't see it for years untill driving passed a layby 40 miles from where i lived,
No wheels , rust every where smashed windows , bonnet twisted.
I tell you it brought a tear to my eyes. Very upsetting.

I had an immaculate low miles mk1 Astra when I was a student. My brother borrowed it from me when he was going his placement year and when he'd saved up enough cash, he eventually bought it from me.
Good job too - a week later it was in a ditch on its roof
Funny thing was he dragged it out (that's another story, not for publication!) and ended up driving it for the next two years with a bashed in side and a big crease in the roof 'til he could afford the insurance excess to get if fixed ..

Ultimately, when you sell it on, the new owner's free to do what they like with it. Having said that, it's slightly depressing to see what's slowly becoming of my old 'teg:

My old Audi Coupe 2.0E. I bought it when I was 19 and loved that thing to bits. It was Panther Black, had Leather Seats, Aircon and everything was electric bar the seats which was pretty good considering it was built in 1990.
I had it for 7 years and sold it last July only to be told that the t
t who bought it had managed to blow the engine up some 5 hours later....

My old Civic.
Was immaculate when I got it, 40,000miles, polished it every weekend and was left wanting for nothing. Sold it to my parents, who sold it to my sister.
I was given it back 3 years later. By christ.
Stunk like pets at home inside. Never did manage to get all the straw out of the boot/back seats. I spent hundreds getting it back to respectable mechanical condition fit for use on the roads. After 6 months it needed about another £500 spending on it as the same suspension corner KEPT having issues. Guessing sister whacked that corner hard and put everything out of alignment and it was wearing parts quickly, even though tyres were fine and it drove OK.
Traded it in, was very sad.

I sold the Manta I bought to replace the Capri Laser to a mate, we sort of, he was a bit unusual and tended to talk rubbish, kind of Walter Mitty tendencies.
It was a tidy 2.0 GTE Hatch in Red, matey boy bumped it within a month and I didnt see it for a while, he said he was geting it resprayed in the Exclusive Blue that was popular on them whilstit was beign repaired, it turned up, red still and he said he decided he didnt like the blue so asked them to put it back to red.... funny how they managed to replicate the mistmatched panesl, the scuffs and disguise the fact it had seen two resprays in quick sucession. He turned it into a dustbin and then had to sell it due to his mounting motoring convictions, saw it go past me three years later ont he motorway, jaw dropping moment seeing a car I thought was dead re-appear, checked since and D358 KBU is now no more once and for all.

My Impreza Turbo, I sold it at about 100k with a full main dealer history and pretty much spotless to a bunch of Mancunian drug dealers (I assume... They looked so dodgy SWMBO called me halfway through the test drive to check I was still alive
) I got two speeding tickets and a red light fine through in the first month after I sold it, apparently they gave the DVLA false details

My M5.
I saw it about a year after I sold it. It had had the full 'magpie' treatment. Horrible aftermarket wheels, naff boot spoiler and fake wing vents were the things that stood out, there was probably more tat, but I only got a fleeting glimpse. I felt sick.
A middle aged balding guy was driving it. f
knugget! Still, it's saveable I suppose, and I hope the next owner will.
ETA: Oh and one of those shark-fin roof aerials, badly applied. I think he was trying to make it look like an E60 (it's an E39), either way, he's a f
king idiot.
