America- Visa Application, before or after new passport?

Hi All,
I am off to San Fran at the end of April 2011.
My passport in valid until 2015, however my better half has advised me to upgrade it to the new style electronic chip type.
I also have to fill out the Visa online form.
Should I get my new passport, and then fill out the form, as the Visa form requires me to enter my Passport number, which will change when I upgrade my passport..
Advise needed chaps. BTW if it makes any difference I am British and live here all my life

Do you mean Visa or do you mean ESTA? If you are just going on holiday and don't have any aspirations to stay over the 90 days allowed under the visa waiver scheme then you only need 6 months on your passport on the date of entry. Yes just planning on visiting, so a Visa Waiver is what I need.
My passport does have over 6months left, but its not the modern electro chip type? My wife is claiming that I should be updating my passport to:
1) Make the picture look more like me.
2) start fresh with the stamps- its has Dubai, Egypt, Jordon and Pakistan on it!
3) I should be using the modern type of passport?

You'll be absolutely fine with the one you have in my opinion, no need to spend any more on getting a Biometric jobby.Yes just planning on visiting, so a Visa Waiver is what I need.
