Someone on here offered me one of these a while ago, but I never actually managed to contact them and get said part, so I faked the standard pas up for another season.

Now that things are a bit more urgent, are there any more lurking around?

Thanks

Another option is to get rid of the whirly round the houses belt and replace it with one that drives just the Alternator and water pump. John Eales does an alternator bracket that will allow you to get rid of both the idlers.

Good idea. Would need to see if it fits first - my Griff isn't exactly standard...

Dnb , I would also suggest the John Eales alt bracket. It is alot neater and you can also lose the hideous standard alternator bracket.

You can do better than the mentioned bracket to obtain better wrap round and adjustment if you are cunning & grovel to Cliff, without losing an arm & a leg hehe

It's not like its a patented design, the logic & layout was used on preserps for years....

Cliff just so you know, groveling isn't quite the same as RRRs licking in case you were getting excited (but then again Tubbs told me about how many bin liners you punctured before you "got one on"!)hehe

Grovel to Cliff? Might have to try that if my laptop doesn't work... Doesn't the preserp pump rotate the other way? So it can't be all that similar to the preserp - it still has to run the serp pump on the "back" face of the belt, so there's limited scope for inventiveness. (I did consider going electric and just having an alternator to drive, but decided against it)

The water pump direction is only another parameter in alignment of the belt... Pump & crank are fixed, but positioning the alt to get max wrap around the pump then moving up/down for tension... by simple geometry is not much like what Ant (for one) has. It gives you a pretty vertical plane to adjust with the alt probably obscuring the dizzy (do we care...) if you work it out.

Haven't had a dizzy in that car for years. Just looking at Ant's pictures now and I see what you mean about getting more wrap around on the water pump.

IIRC if you make a 2" spacer that clamps to the inner (inlet) 2 boltholes on the head it needs a pivot from between those 2 points, a set through the water pump with a turnbuckle front + rear should be extremely secure & easily adjustable.

Before you all go reinventing the wheel, have any of you actually asked JE whether he has ever come across a problem with his design due to the perceived lack of wrap? I have wink

Engines work.... but we still look for ways to make them better, why is JE stuff any different? Cavemen used to be happy with what they had hehe

Anything can be made better with time & effort wink

The pertinent thing I pointed out is that we can design with the dizzy out of the way ~ which obviously to me opens yet another door IYSWIM?

I used the Morgan serpentine alternator bracket with the J.E. tensioner bracket on my TR7 V8 3.9i, this has exactly the same layout as the J.E. brackets. Initially I was also very concerned about the lack of contact on the back of the belt with the water pump pulley, but 15,000 miles and 5 years later it proved faultless. If I was really picky occasionally the belt squeaked for less than a second when firing up. It was hardly noticeable and so in frequent I didn't experiment with different makes and widths of belts.

Interestingly Morgan had the shorter length 7 micro-v belt specially made by Gates which sounds like a good option.

If it's good enough for Morgan then it's good enough for me. If I had no PAS and was tight for space I would certainly use the J.E. layout again.
