Can anyone out there recommend some software, well, freeware really, that provides the optimal route for a number of destinations, i.e. if I were to submit twenty different postcodes, something that could calculate the shortest route from departure point to all the locations and then back home?

As above, it's a non-trivial problem and certainly wouldn't attract free software.

Someone asked the question on google here, and there's a couple of suggested free websites on there. I haven't clicked on them though.

Enjoy.
I use this for all of my route planning smile
Fine, but it won't optimise your 20 postcodes into the best order for you. It'll just visit them in the order you specify. The OP is after something that will decide the best order to visit the locations.

If you have the time you can use trial and error to optimise the route but it will take a bit of time and need to be done each time you plan a new route.

Hi Lakelord,

I may be able to help - I work for a company that deals in this area. Although I’m naturally biased, I make no apologies when I say that for the kind of job you’re talking about, this could be the best solution. The link is in my profile.

The service isn’t free but pricing starts at £15+VAT to optimise 100 delivery points (and this is of course offset against the money you will be saving in terms of time and petrol).

We do, however, offer a 30-day no-obligation free trial which would allow you to dip your toe in the water. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or would like to set up a free trial.

Mod note: We don't permit adverts in the forums, however as you're answering the question I've just deleted direct links.

Aye, re-read the post & edited it to use the AA Route Finder link.
I really should read the OP properly before jumping into a reply frown
