The lad's XBOX 360 has just suffered the '3 rings of death'. After succesfully fixing a PS2 many moons ago, I had a look on line, but it all looks a bit complicated and doesn't seem to have a good success rate. It's over 3 years old so returning it isn't an option.

Interested in the success rate of any PHers that may have attempted it, or if you've sent it away, how much was the repair. Failing that, it looks like binning the old one and forking out for a new console.

I used to fix 360's a few years ago and by far the best DIY method for fixing the RROD was the x-clamp replacement, however it is only ever temporary, 6 months or so generally. I got about a year out of a mates once but I had to fix it 3 times.

Don't attempt any of the towel/heatgun/oven tricks, they are just stupid.

They can be fixed properly via a BGA reflow, but they can be expensive and often more than the value of the console, even places that have the gear for this will generally only offer a month or 2 warranty on their work.

Really once you get RROD your only real option is to buy another or send to MS for "repair" (they just replace the motherboard), if you don't want to buy new then a 2nd hand 60GB pro or 250GB elite should ensure you get one with 65nm cores which is really when they stopped being so fragile.

Game sell the 60gb for £170 with a years warranty.

I found myself in a similar position a a couple of months ago. Repair is aprox £80 direct from Microsoft. You cannot tamper with the console or they will not carry out the repair.

I decided to buy the new version with built in WiFi as I didn't trust the reliability of the older XBOX consoles.

google for xbox repairs in your area, my dvd drive went and found a local guy who would fix that for £30 and fix the red ring for £40.

Cheers all. I don't really play it. The young 'un is making noises about a PS3, but he's got so many 360 games, it'll mean him starting again.

The 250gb with built in wi-fi is available for £159, so his xmas money might go on that. I've seen a 'thingy' that would allow him to transfer all the stuff off his old hard drive and put it on a slim one for £14.99. I take it he would need one of these.

Correct, the device transfers all of your saved game data and profile. You can do it manually but apparently it's a pain in the backside. I went down the lazy route and purchased the 'thingy' you speak of. Have a look on Ebay as most people will only ever use them once and sell it on.
