Hi guys, I have been looking for a new daily runner, and ended up narrowing it down to either an E46 330d, or E39 530d..

I will probably be doing 600+ miles a week, so need somthing nice to be in, reliable, half decent on fuel and comfy for long journeys. This example of an E39 530d is pretty much exactly what I want, bar the auto box, but I can live with that as the rest of the car seems spot on. Granted it's high milage, but does it look around the right price/spec ? According to the ad, it's had a brand new BMW engine 40k miles ago, so my only real concern after reading up on them, is that the autobox could be approaching problem time?

Thanks, Will biggrin

It's got most of the desirable options, sports seats, widescreen nav, phone kit.

I wouldn't be too worried about the gearbox, you'll have to see what it's like on the test drive.

Airbag light is on from either the passenger seat buckle switch or the occupancy sensor mat in the seat.

2 big rusty blisters on the back though, maybe one of those bike carriers, so check the arches over, and the boot lid too.

Just a quick tip i know the E46 will need it and im Not sure if the 530d will ( they might share the same engine) but look at getting Swirl Flap Blanks fitted! other wise if the swirl flaps break your engine will be a mess. There Not expensive to get the blanks either smile hope this helps

I would try and find one without the Nav, it is now seriously clunky and well past its sell by date, but is over 10 years old, plus that is the CD version so to get it up to date with newer looking menus etc. you will be looking at around £400 and still rubbish.

You can buy an all in one OEM looking unit that does nav, ipod, mp3, bluetooth, internet etc. etc. for £500 that works so much better.

This is the unit....

Those rear seats are ruined, has somebody been holding Sumo matches in the back or something? Mine has 30k more miles on it and the rear seats are still factory fresh!

It is, but wood was an option.

The e39 looks fair, however, I would carefully study the service book, and contact the "BMW" dealearship that changed the engine and also ask WHY? good luck

2002 with 140k on it for nearly £5k? Are they really going for that?

My view is to avoid BMW Diesels all together. The problems/cost/frequency ratio means you'll end up spending the same as if you'd bought a petrol. This one might not be your thing but you get the idea.

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

I'm good friends with my mechanic and he has E39 and E46 Diesels down there all the time for injectors, manifolds, turbos, gearboxes and swirl flaps.

600 miles a week get the diesel. The auto box will be a risk and a test drive will not tell u if there is a problem. It can be working perfectly now and fail next week. Or not at all. I have just had the box on my 2003 e39 530d rebuilt. It failed completely without warning as I was driving along one day. Not cheap to fix at £1800 Inc vat but that's all it's cost in 2 years and 30000 miles so pretty cheap motoring all round. Great car

Well, I bought the car biglaugh.... The car has FULL Rydale BMW service history, the engine was changed at 102,000 miles by BMW due to the owner driving through a deep puddle and sucking water up! All the issues on the car were sorted before I bought it, dealership replaced 3x parking sensors, the airbag light was the passenger seat sensor (replaced & reset), and the rust on the pics has been repaired and repainted. Car also came with a fresh 12 month MOT.

I have to say, Parva were very good to deal with, totally upfront about all the problems with the car, and sorted everything before I took delivery of it. Everything on the car works perfectly, I am VERY happy with it so far, on the motorway run home it returned 41Mpg cruising at 80-90Mph with an occasional blip to 120 catching my mate up in his Cossie, doing early 30's around the town/backraods laugh.

Plans for the car are a yellow (vanilla) magic tree (+15Bhp/45Lbs/ft across the rev range) , and just keep it tidy and serviced nicely. Might do the swirl flaps & get a re-map once the 6 month warranty is up.

Great car so far, lets hope my BMW ownership experience stays this good hehe

Oh, and If anyone wants a nice car, check out Parva, highly reccomended.

No mate. But hearing some good things about the now, early versions or firmwares had issues, but seem to be getting better.
