checked inside mine for first time today. Its a thick mass of wire mesh - very dirty so I've washed it out with spirits. Is this what it should look like and have I done the right thing..?

Yes, and ... yes. Just make sure that the solvent used has evaporated before you replace it - Streaky

Worth checking/cleaning the pipe to it whilst your at it. Mine (350) was absolutely chocker with crud!!

Not directly but it will pressurise the engine and can start oil leaks.

I've heard of race engines with blocked breathers inflating the tin valley gasket hard up against the inlet manifold.
