It could just be that its hard to see the whole thing in context, have you got a wider angle pic?

My car returned from work with a different gear knob.
Scratched, pitted looked terrible, to add insult to injury it was misaligned
as well. I couldn't look at it. So a new gear knob (eventually) from a
a breakers. I cut a bolt down fitted it into a drill repolished and Scotchbrighted it.
Then refitted and set it straight, that's anal for you.
Oh your ring, I thought it looked good in the first pic, subtle.
Though if it makes you happy, roll with it.
Ok didn't notice the bit about the leather coming away,

I'm gunna ask Mrs Fubes to polish my knob later. Wonder what she will say? 
FWIW, I have a chrome ring around the base of my shaft (I'll set them up, you knock them down) and it looks great (IMHO) but it was designed for the job and fits perfectly (from memory, cost about £40 from PHer Dave Beer?) but your Audi one doesn't seem to fit as well (just an observation, dont take it to heart fella). Maybe it needs a little more adjustment?

Personally I'm not keen. I think it looks just a tad too big and bulky, plus that fact that it doesn't quite fit the contours of the tunnel just highlights that it wasn't made for the car.
I think a more slender ring would look better, or perhaps (if possible) something like this found in Lambos:
