I had a similar thing with mine last year, there is a bit of a common fault where you don't quite get enough voltage to the solenoid/starter. Easiest solution if this is your problem is to have another starter button and/relay put in with a feed directly from the battery through the relay/button to the starter for when the original button/wiring decides not to work.
There is a relay in the passenger footwell near the ECU that the starter solenoid feed goes through. Mine had corroded spade terminals and suffered exactly the symptoms you describe. The corrosion wasn't apparent until I unplugged the relay, however cleaning up the connections cured the problem permanently. Its got to be worth a try.
I had a new really and ignition module and the silver key thing re-wired and a new starter motor but none of that seemed to cure it. It would b fine for a bit but still kept comin back. Eventually found some info on here sayin that the signal to the starter goes through various parts of the alarm/immobiliser, relays, plug connections etc. By the time it gets back to the starter there is only about 10v which is not enough. The garage just wired me a another button and relay straight from the battery to the starter.

Cheers bud will be on the case today, this sounds like the offending bit,am going to order a new big fuse or two today just in caseJust an update, carpets were very wet on passengers side also ecu felt damp.Where are the relays mentioned above, there is a box above ecu is this where i should be heading.Car in garage now so wont be getting wet again(i hope).Found lots of wet newspaper which tells me damp has been a previous issue, ordered new big fuse x3 just to be on the safe side.Next on the list will be door seals and a top seal for passengers side. Thanks for the help sure we will talk again very very soon;)ps I LOVE HER

Hold the start button for longer.
Mine has done this 3 times in the last year or so. Does it once and then it's fine again afterwards..... Very odd.
^ this, try the legendary 'long press' of the black button. The Guinness record is 94s but unofficially owners have died of old age holding the button and descendents have taken over holding the button until it fires up.Mine has done this 3 times in the last year or so. Does it once and then it's fine again afterwards..... Very odd.

Sorry to drag up an old topic but was hoping someone can point me in the direction of this relay. My Cerbera is a 1998 4.5 and I can't see any relay in the passenger side foot well, just the ECU, heater control and wiper control modules.Gassing Station | Cerbera | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

...but a passenger footwell aint one of them!!
