help please with room theromstat , and programmer
Discussion
hi i want to change the room stat in our hallway, at the moment i'm sorting out the utility room in there is the boiler (normal boiler with hot water cyclinder) and there is the programmer which controls the hot water and heating.
I was wondering would it be best to get rid of the programmer and have all in one room thermostat/programmer device in the hallway, want something modern and slim if there such a thing.
probably best to order off the net but i have a wickes close by and just looked online and they have this.

Is it easy to get rid of the programmer there or better and easier to keep the programmer, although i suppose i could get another programmer and thena room stat, my current programmer doesnt allow for weekends so at 6am on the weekend the heating comes blazing on so want the weekends to come on at different times.

heres what i have.

In a gravity hot water system, you can't get rid of the programmer and rely on the room 'stat otherwise the boiler would only be able to heat the hot water when the room 'stat was calling for heating.
If you had a fully pumped system you could use a cylinder 'stat to control the hot water but it would be firing during the night to keep the water hot.

If you just want to do it for looks, there's no reason why you couldn't replace the room stat with one of a different design, even a programmable one. But it will only have any effect while the programmer has scheduled the heating to be on. thanks
In fact you could leave the heating side of the programmer on all the time and use a programmable stat to control room temp. All the programmer would be doing then is controlling the hot water.

are these sort of things all interchangable? ie the honeywell will change right over to this one?
also found a programmer, 2 channel for water and heating.

I'd personally replace the room stat with a Honeywell CM907 programmable room thermostat or similar, depending on budget.
Leave the exisiting timer in place to control the Hot Water and either leave the heating on permenant or wire the CH ON wire into a permenant live supply.
Either way will allow the stat to have full control over the heating.
The Honeywell allows you to programme each day individually, it also has a frost protection mode and a holiday mode.

Thanks for replying I know i shouldnt go on looks only but i like the look of the salus untis both the room stats and the prgrammers, and they pretty good priced.Leave the exisiting timer in place to control the Hot Water and either leave the heating on permenant or wire the CH ON wire into a permenant live supply.

one more question i promise, with the room stats and programmers, are they are a straight swap over with the wires?
thanks

Just replaced mine from 2002 with the above Honeywell ST9400C - paid £25 on Ebay.
Very easy to use, wiring was simple. Most of these units are backwards compatible.

Salus are ok once you figure out how to use them.one more question i promise, with the room stats and programmers, are they are a straight swap over with the wires?

Wiring is usually similar. Live and Neutral supply for the timer, with a switched live for CH and HW, usually CH ON and HW ON. You may even find the timers have identical backplates that wont need changing.
As for the stat, you will only need a live in and a live out, which judging by your picture will be the red and yellow wire.
I'm sure if you post pics of your new units you'll get plenty of advice.
just downloaded the installation manual it says only two wires are neededso form my stat what do i do with the earth, just put it in a terminal block and leave as is, or te block thats in the stat as ive jst read that tere is one there. still got to get my head round what is live and what is switched live! red live, yellow switched live?
